'An injury to one is an injury to all': IU Grad Workers Union confirms several international student

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The United States Department of Homeland Security has revoked a number of student visas at Indiana University as the Trump administration doubles down on its latest immigration crackdown involving international students.

The Indiana Daily Student, IU's student-run newspaper, confirmed the news on Tuesday after IU Provost Rahul Shrivastav revealed at a Bloomington Faculty Council meeting that a "small number" of students reportedly had their visas rescinded. IDS said no details were immediately provided by the university, as Shrivastav said the university was striving to comply with changing federal regulations.

The Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition also confirmed in an Instagram post on Wednesday that "several" international students in the union had lost their visas. As of this article's publication, it remains unclear what led to the visa revocations.

"Yesterday afternoon, the Department of Homeland Security revoked the visas for several IU graduate workers and fellow IGWC members," IGWC said in the post.

It is part of a national trend involving dozens of colleges across the country as the Trump administration has sought to revoke visas for hundreds of students, citing their alleged involvement in pro-Palestinian campus protests in some instances.

ACLU of Indiana deemed the recent visa removals as "significant" threats to free speech.

"The recent terminations of student visas for several Indiana University students are a deeply troubling development that poses significant threats to the free speech rights of everyone in our country," the ACLU of Indiana said in a statement.

The organization added that it was still working to learn more about the details surrounding the visa removals and urged any international students worried about their visa status to visit their website for additional information.

FOX59/CBS4 has contacted IU Thursday morning for additional information. As of this article's publication, we have yet to receive a response.
