Duplex fire in Lebanon leaves family displaced

LEBANON, Ind. - A duplex fire in Lebanon left a family displaced on Sunday.




According to a Facebook post from the Lebanon Fire Department, crews were dispatched to the 1000 block of Lafayette Court around 1:33 p.m. to investigate an active smoke alarm. When dispatchers received initial calls about the fire, they were told the smoke alarm had been on for at least 30 minutes.

Officers with the Lebanon Police Department beat LFD to the scene. When they arrived in the area, police told LFD personnel visible smoke was emanating from one residence.




LPD officers ultimately forced entry into the building to see if anybody was inside it. In their initial sweep, police did not find anybody inside the duplex.




LFD also conducted a search of the structure because police could not access one of the home's bedrooms. Like LPD, LFD personnel did not find anybody in the structure.




After sweeping the building, LFD attacked the fire and brought it under control.




Though the building was empty when the fire broke out, LFD later confirmed a family lived in the duplex. LFD reported that the family was displaced because the structure sustained heavy smoke and fire damage. The family is currently receiving assistance from the Salvation Army.




After the fire was extinguished, investigators determined the cause of the blaze was "electrical in nature."




A Boone County EMS team checked out two LPD officers at the scene because they had inhaled smoke while responding to the fire. Both officers were released after evaluation.
