Lead-footed driver flees from cops after 2 tickets in less than 2 hours

MUNCIE, Ind. - A Muncie driver with a need for speed didn't learn his lesson the first time after being pulled over by a state trooper for speeding on a suspended license.

Not even two hours later, a Muncie police officer clocked the driver going 65 mph in a 30 mph zone. Not wanting to get a second ticket, the driver flipped off his headlights and sped into the night.

Reginal Russell II, 19, was arrested after fleeing down a dead-end street and running out of road. He was arrested shortly after midnight on Thursday on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.

According to the Muncie Police Department, an officer clocked Russell's Audi A4 flying down N. Wheeling Avenue at more than double the speed limit. The officer noted the road was wet and a light rain was falling, making for slippery and dangerous conditions.

Russell is accused of trying to flee from the officer by turning off his headlights and turning on New York Avenue in an attempt to speed away. But he drove into a dead-end and gave himself up by exiting his vehicle with his hands in the air.

Police said Russell apologized for fleeing from the officer and said he'd only run to avoid a second ticket. A quick search in the database revealed a state trooper had just cited Russell at approximately 10:40 p.m. for speeding and driving on a suspended license with expired plates.

With 2 tickets and resisting now under his belt, Russell was taken into custody and transported to the Delaware County Jail.

Court records reveal Russell has a penchant for lead-footed driving. In the last four years, at least six speeding citations are listed in the court records. The latest was filed in Anderson the same day as Russell's double ticket night and included a misdemeanor charge of driving while suspended.

If charged and convicted of a Level 6 felony for resisting law enforcement, Russell could face up to two and a half years in prison. The Delaware County Prosecutor's Office will determine what, if any, charges are filed in this case.
