How's it going today?

It's going good. I feel good. I just got out and did my retail runs today. I'm out my promotion tour. I'm happy with everything.

How has the tour been going so far?

It's going good. I just left Michigan and Detroit. They feeling me up there. I've been traveling over the country for the past 4 months. We haven't gotten a bad response yet. They lovin' it.

You should be wrapping up the tour in a couple of weeks.

Yeah. Mid-December we'll be wrapping it up. The album comes out November 30. The first of January we're going right back out for Phase 2 to start it again.

Talk about the album. What type of impression are you trying to come out with?

With this album I tried to bring back the real meaning of R&B and that is Rhythm and Blues. Over the years, I think that R&B has definitely left its throne. Music is definitely not what it used to be. I want to put in my input to help artists such as Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, Angie Stone, and soulful artists like that to bring the realness back to the game. That's what I'm doing with this album.

What does it mean for you to have this album come out on your birthday?

It's so important to me right now. Everything is in God's hand. It's in His plan. The album was actually supposed to come out on October 19, but we had to wait for the samples to get cleared. It just so happened that the time it got cleared and the time to put it out ended up on my birthday. That's was a blessing. I'm happy with that.

With you being so young, what's the response been to you trying to take R&B music back to where you think it needs to be?

It's not hard because it I think a lot of people be shocked to see a young person trying to do it like how I'm doing it. So it's really like, "Ok, I see what he's doing, but damn this cat is only 19." It draws the crowd more to me. It draws my fans more to me and makes them want to know more about me and to want to get to know. [It makes them wonder] how do I talk about these kind of concepts and how do you come up with these titles.

Coming into the industry what artists are you emulating? Who have you looked up to?

I've looked up to K-Ci and Jo Jo, older artists such as Bobby Womack, and Al Green. I've got Al Green in my deck now. David Ruffin and the Temptation. I grew up around to a lot of the old school cats in the family. Growing up around them and listening to the music that they listened to and watching what they do inspired me to do what I do.

Urban MysticHow did you get your start in the music business?

I started singing in the church choir. I started singing when I was 5 years old. I'm still singing in the church choir. My brother had a record deal. His name is Chris Johnson. Back in 98 he a record deal with a company called Big Baller records. He cut a record and he heard me signing in the bathroom. He was like, "bruh I think I can use you on the hook." I said "let's go," so he took me to the studio. That was my first time hearing my voice back on tape. I was 13 [years old] and that when I realized that's what I need to do. Every since he's been behind me, pushing me, and here I am today.

Talk about your father for a second. You've said that he's provided a lot of inspi
