Can we just dub 2017 the year of the female rapper? Between the Remy Ma v.s Nicki Minaj beef and countless hard tracks coming from some amazing femcee's this is the year female rapper. Not to say women haven't been rapping in the past (I am the biggest Lil Kim fan of all time) however, every generation has their strongest hitters and right now these women are hitting hardest. What I love most about the women breaking into the industry today is that there is so much sugar and spice. This isn't just happening in the states either female rappers are taking over all across the globe.
So since I'm dubbing this the year of the female rapper here's a couple of artists I'm obsessing over right now you should check out.
Track to check out: Foreva
I'm sure you already know who Cardi B is and I don't have to go in depth explaining how she's taking over the game. Bodak Yellow is doing amazingly well for Love and Hip Hop New York's breakout star. Her ability to let her personality shine through her tracks makes her one of the realest artists to break into the game. Bodak Yellow isn't the only track you should be checking out. Cardi B has two albums under her belt now and both are equally as great. If you haven't listened to Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1 then do yourself a favor and check that out now. Not only is it her first mixtape but the track "Foreva" is a bop that everyone should be playing.
Track to check out: Rules
Straight out of Tennessee, BBymuth is a force to reckon with when it comes to the "rap-like-I-talk" style of hip hop. She makes rapping seem easy with her ability to rap over any type of beat something that not even the most talented/famous rappers can do. It's obvious when listening to "I'm Da Shit" and listening to "Rules". Both have distinctly different sounds but her exceptional way of switching up her tone between tracks (or even on the same track) makes it obvious that she's someone you should continue to check for.
Track to check out: Scraps
CupcakKe is currently my favorite thing about Chicago. She's dirty, sexual, and down right empowering with the way she embraces her body and sexual desires. She isn't shy about it either which can come off as surprising coming from an artist that started off writing Christian poetry. Her sexualized (yet comical) and lyrically strong content has gained her quite a fan base over the years. However, don't let songs like "Cumshot" fool you into thinking CupcakKe is just another novelty hyper-sexualized rapper because tracks like "Scraps" on her album Queen Elizabitch say otherwise.
Track to check out: Real Ting ft Giggs.
If Nicki Minaj was a UK rapper with a heavy Grime and Hip Hop influence that made music you could listen to while twerking on a Sunday afternoon this would be her. That's not the best thing about her music though. Stefflon Don's tracks are fun, energetic, and pure black girl magic from beginning to end. I just recently discovered Stefflon Don's track "Real Ting" and she's been on repeat ever since. Don't believe she's worth the listen?
Track to check out: G.O.A.T
Like every other woman on this list Princess Nokia doesn't really need an introduction. Feminist, bruja, and so much more Princess Nokia is literally changing the game with her artistic vision and has been doing it since 2010 when she stepped on the scene with "Destiny". Princess Nokia's sound isn't just carefree. It's honest, fun, light hearted and is going to stand the test of time. No two songs sound the same and that's what makes her stand out. If you love New York hip hop as much as I do you need to check her out now. Because she's "that weird girl that's runnin' shit".
