While Rick Ross' Deeper Than Rap did hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200, some say the numbers were weak.
"150,000 is not a lot of copies sold on a major [label]," MTV.com reader Eagles36 wrote in. "Fifty did 691,000 his first week. Rick Ross is a joke."
Meanwhile, Ross advocate DCollins4444 said to naysayers, "Haters, haters, haters. Stand up ... it's a good album. This album would have sold [a million] six years ago in its first week."
For the record, Deeper Than Rap's first-week numbers aren't far off from his first two LPs, both of which went in at #1. Last year's Trilla pushed 198,000 copies in its first week, while his 2006 effort Port of Miami sold 187,000 out of the gate.
"It's interesting, because it's so many different factors working against the music industry right now," veteran journalist, music blogger and Hot 97 radio personality Miss Info said about the Ross debate. "You look at digital downloading and compound it with the...click to continue reading

LOS ANGELES â€" With movie theaters in Mexico shut down to contain the spread of swine flu, Hollywood studios have delayed plans to kick off the summer movie season there. The country is regularly among the top 12 foreign markets for U.S. movies.
Actors who had plans to promote films in the country, such as Hugh Jackman and Miley Cyrus, are also staying away for now.
That has left some fans, stuck at home as public life in the country has slowed, relying on movie rentals and TV for entertainment.
Gibran Valencia, 23, has spent time watching rented movies, cooking and cleaning his Mexico City home since his admission exam for a music college was postponed recently.
Valencia was looking forward to the debut of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but the premiere was pushed back from this weekend. Even if theaters open soon, he's wary of mingling with the crowd and said he'll avoid theaters for a month.
"I'd let things settle down more in case there's someone with the virus there," he said.
News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox now says Wolverine is set for a tentative May 14 start in Mexico, although the film opens in the rest of the world this weekend. Fox said it expected theaters in Mexico, most of which closed last weekend, to reopen May 10, but is watching the situation closely.
Wolverine star Jackman is scheduled to go...click to continue reading

LOS ANGELES - It’s been a long recovery for Shia LaBeouf since the night his Ford F-150 flipped during a late-night collision last July, injuring his left hand" and in a new interview with Playboy, the star said it’ll never be the same again.
“Permanently f****d,†he told Playboy. “I’ll never be back to 100 percent or have full recovery. I can’t zipper my zipper or button my shirt without extreme pain. But I chalk it up as my own s**t. This accident is what I needed in my life. I’m not in control. For the first time, I can admit that and know that"- the hand is like a tattoo that says MISTAKE.â€
Shia, 22, told the mag he shouldn’t have gotten behind the wheel that fateful night.
“I had a whiskey and three beers,†he said. “I’m not going to start speaking on law stuff now and corner myself, but the fact that I ever got into the car was a mistake.â€
“I’m in AA now, too,†he continued. “I’ve had drinks, but it has been a leveling-out process. Am I an alcoholic? I may not be. I don’t know. But I also know that in the situation I’m in, with temptations what they are, I have no room for alcohol in my life.â€
As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office announced last September that there was “insufficient evidence†to charge the actor with drunken driven, though his license was suspended in January as a result of his “refusal of chemical tests†directly following the accident.
Despite his troubles, the young...click to continue reading

BEIJING - Jackie Chan and a host of Chinese pop stars performed at Beijing's massive Bird's Nest stadium on Friday without a hint of the uproar caused by the veteran action star's recent comments about freedom and China.
The 55-year-old "Rush Hour" star told a business forum last month that freedom may not be a good thing for authoritarian mainland China. Critics called his comments an insult to the Chinese people.
Chan's spokesman, Solon So, later said Chan's comments were taken out of context and that the actor was referring to freedom in the entertainment industry and not Chinese society at large.
There were no signs of protests as Chan took the stage Friday at the site of the Beijing Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies, with the 91,000-capacity stadium about three-quarters full as the concert got under way.
Chan told the crowd that organizers sold 70,000 tickets. The controversy over Chan's remarks was widely reported in Hong Kong and Taiwan, but largely ignored in mainland China.
Chan sang the patriotic song "Descendants of the Dragon." Other performers included Taiwanese singer-songwriter Jonathan Lee and Hong Kong's Emil Chau, Alan Tam, Joey Yung and Hacken Lee.

ATLANTA – Although rapper Nas received backlash over his racial epithet-titled album before switching it to "Untitled," he says earning a Grammy nomination for his controversial disc encouraged him to keep speaking his mind.
"It showed that I'm here and my voice is relevant," he told The Associated Press on Thursday night during an event held by BMI, a performing rights organization. "It shows my work is appreciated."
Some like the Rev. Jesse Jackson criticized Nas, calling his original title choice, which used the N-word, morally offensive and too degrading. Nas decided to changed the title but the lyrics stayed the same for the gold-selling album, which was released last summer.
Nas, who calls himself a "street disciple and political voice of hip-hop," feels he was able to get his message across.
"It tends to scare people and offend them," he said. "That's what it's supposed to do. A record is supposed to do that every once in a while."
Now, Nas says he might take aim at another issue: homelessness in America.
"We have it good here in America. We're spoiled," he said. "We don't realize that people are poor, don't have food, no water in this same world we live in. Those are the things I'm concerned with and need to talk about," he added.

On Friday night in Atlanta, T.I. put his beef with rapper Shawty Lo to bed, inviting his former rival onstage during a performance of "Big Things Poppin' (Do It)" at Tip's Club Crucial.
On Monday night in the Bronx, after he finished speaking to kids at a Boys & Girls Club, T.I. finally broke his silence about why he decided to end the feud.
"See, I'm a grown man. These situations are not that major for me, you know? It's always more blown up in the media than it is in my mind. That's nothing to me. I never even considered...click to continue reading
