Will and Jaden Smith

Will Smith will co-star with his son Jaden Smith in a futuristic sci-fi adventure, as yet untitled. Will Smith's own production company, Overbrook Entertainment, will produce the film in partnership with M. Night Shyamalan and it will be released through Columbia pictures.

Overbrook Entertainment was started by Will between 1997 and 1999 and is based in Beverly Hills. Overbrook's co-founders, Ken Stovitz and James Lassiter will also be involved in the film's production.

It's an unusual and unique arrangement for Shyamalan, who always likes to maintain complete control over the production of any movie he's involved with. Shyamalan said, "The chance to make a scary science-fiction film starring Jaden and Will is my dream project."

Not many details have been released about the film's plot, but it's rumored to resemble a cross between Smith's I Am Legend (2007) and The Road (2009), which starred Viggo Mortensen. It will be set 1000 years in the future and chronicles a young boy's attempts to find and rescue his estranged father on an abandoned planet Earth, after their ship crashes.

Doug Belgrade, president of Columbia Pictures said, "Night is an outstanding filmmaker who has a tremendous vision for this science-fiction adventure story, and we couldn't be more excited to be working again with Jaden after our experiences on The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) and The Karate Kid (2010). We're thrilled to have the two of them together on this project."

LEGEND, ROOTS Fine With Taking Risks On 'Wake Up!'

When a top music executive found out that John Legend was working with the Roots on an album dedicated to social change and activism, he didn't give Legend words of encouragement.

"What the hell are you doing?" is what Legend recalls that executive saying.

"He's not directly responsible for my career but he's quite a popular record executive, whose name I won't mention," Legend said, laughing. "(And) he was not approving of this."

Fortunately for Legend, the executives at his own label, Columbia Records, had his back. Now the joint collaboration, "Wake Up!" is one of the best reviewed albums of the year.

The CD, released last month, finds Legend and the hip-hop band covering 1960s and 1970s soul songs from iconic acts like Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Nina Simone and Bill Withers, among others (the CD also has one original song).

"It is a covers record but it really doesn't feel like a covers record at all," said Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, the Roots leader who co-produced the album. "I guess certain music connoisseurs will know the cuts ... they weren't like, Billboard-charted hits. They were chosen for their message."

The sound is somewhat of a departure for Legend. Though he's a soul singer, "Wake Up!" features less crooning and more grit. He's singing songs about war, politics and race in a different tone than he's done in the past.

That was accomplished thanks to ?uestlove, Legend said.

"Ahmir was really steering the ship," he added, acknowledging not knowing some of the songs before recording them. "I really leaned on him for his expertise."

The Grammy winner agrees that he took a risk with "Wake Up!" — but he didn't think twice about creating the project.

"The thing is the industry as a whole is risk-averse because people are losing jobs, the business of selling records is contracting, and so people are very dependent on 'You gotta get that radio hit, you gotta sell these singles, you gotta sell these ring tones,'" Legend explained. "And we made the anti-that album basically, and I think it's going to work."

"You know it's a shame when in 2010 making an album of music is now a risky thing to do," chimed in ?uestlove.

Work on "Wake Up!" started two years ago, but then Legend went on a tour to promote his last album, 2008's "Evolver," while the Roots recorded their ninth CD, "How I Got Over," and worked as the house band for "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon."

Legend said coming back to finish the CD allowed them "to live with music, live with the arrangements and really develop them."

While Legend and the Philadelphia-based Roots hadn't worked together in the past, Legend says he remembers passing off his demo to ?uestlove when he attended the University of Pennsylvania in the 1990s.

It wasn't an instant musical connection.

"He missed out is all I'm saying!" Legend said with a smile as ?uestlove pulled up his shirt to hide his face.

"He thinks I tea-coastered his demo, like it's somewhere under my chocolate mug," ?uestlove said.

MAD COBRA Shot, In Critical Condition

Mad Cobra, Danchehall/Reggae Artist, has been shot several times in Spanish Town, Jamaica, the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, raised in the parish of St. Mary and relocated back to the place of his birth during his teenage years, he began performing under his stage name, taken from a character in the G.I. Joe comic books, while still in his teens.

Mad Cobra signed a deal with Columbia Records. He had a smash hit "Flex", a single which interpolated elements of The Temptations' "Just My Imagination". It topped the US Rap Singles chart, hitting #7 on the R&B chart, and peaking at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

One of the year's most hotly-anticipated hip-hop music releases, "Till The Casket Drops" is the upcoming third label release for Clipse and their first with Columbia Records. The duo debuted with 2002's "Lord Willin'," which reached #1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart and #4 on the Billboard Top 200. "Lord Willin'" spawned the hit singles, "Grindin'" and "When Was The Last Time," which peaked at #34 and #19 respectively on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Their critically acclaimed sophomore effort, "Hell Hath No Fury," was 2006's Top 10 album in Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, SPIN Magazine & The New York Times. According to Billboard Magazine, Grammy Award winning duo Mary Mary, now hold the record for the longest climb to the top 10 in the chart’s 67-year history as their smash single, “God In Me” jumped from 11-10 in its 42nd week on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Mary Mary is now the only gospel act to have at least two top 10s this decade on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, “Shackles (Praise You)” peaked at No.9 in 2000.

“God In Me” is currently celebrating its 7th consecutive week at the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart.

The Sound occupied the #1 slot on the Billboard Gospel Album chart for more than six months since its release in October 2008 and was #1 for 19 consecutive weeks. The Sound has also spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart.

Featuring Kierra "Kiki" Sheard, "God In Me," perhaps the first gospel record to deploy an auto-tune, continues Mary Mary's visionary blending of urban, hip-hop, soul, funk and pop elements with the power and conviction of their Christian message.

Mary Mary performed "God In Me," with guest artist Queen Latifah, at the 2009 BET Awards, where the pair was named this year's Best Gospel Artist.

2009 has been a banner year for Mary Mary. "Get Up," the lead single from The Sound, earned the duo 2009's Best Gospel Performance Grammy (their second overall) and a 2009 Dove Award (the pair's seventh to-date) for Urban Recorded Song of the Year. Mary Mary also took this year's NAACP Image Award for Best Gospel Artist (Traditional or Contemporary).

Heralded as "Praiseworthy" by People magazine, The Sound peaked at #1 on a variety of Billboard Christian and Gospel albums charts shortly after its release in October 2008. The Sound entered the Billboard Top 200 at #7, giving Mary Mary their highest

charting -- and second Top 10 -- album on that chart (2005's Mary Mary peaked at #8 on the Top 200). Mary Mary and The Sound achieved one of the highest chart debuts on the Top 200 of any gospel album released in 2008. A bona-fide crossover smash, The Sound made a "Hot Shot" debut on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at #2.
