As part of Google's ongoing commitment to encouraging women to pursue careers in computing and technology, they have announced the 2012 Google Anita Borg Scholarship, through which they hope to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders.
Scholarships of $1,000 - $10,000 will be awarded based on the strength of candidates' academic background and demonstrated leadership. A group of female undergraduate and graduate student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool.
All scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to visit Google headquarters in Mountain View, California for a networking retreat which will include workshops with a series of speakers, panelists, breakout sessions and social activities.
The deadline to apply is Monday, February 6, 2012.

The Nexus S, which will be the first to feature the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, will cost $529 unlocked without a service contract. Packaged with a two-year T-Mobile agreement, it'll run $199. Along with a front-facing camera for video-chatting, there's also a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera with flash capabilities. Users will be able to make calls through the Internet using Voice over IP (VoIP) technology.
And with near-field communications (NFC) support, users may be able to make mobile payments with a wave of their phones. An internal gyroscope will flip the screen as users turn the phone.

The new feature will be facilitated by start-ups iLike and LaLa, which will enable songs to be streamed on the Google page that will also feature a "buy" button to help reduce the number of steps fans need to acquire music.
The new service has been lined up to launch next Wednesday by iLike and LaLa and all the major labels -- including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Music - will be involved in the launch.

According to a tweet by Mark Glaser from PBS's MediaShift, Google is in talks with the white-label Internet video provider Brightcove and wants to acquire the company for up to $700 million. Brightcove's customers include a large variety of large enterprises such as the New York Times, Showtime, Universal Music, AMC, AOL, and the Weather Channel. If this rumors turns out to be true, this acquisition would easily turn Google into the dominant commercial Web video provider.
While Brightcove started out as a consumer video service, the company's half-hearted attempts at convincing consumers to host their videos on Brightcove.TV came to an end when Brightcove shut down that site in November 2007. Last November, Brightcove also shut down its free Brightcove Network, which featured content from roughly 40,000 publishing partners.
This June, Brightcove's CEO Jeremy Allaire told Sillicon Alley Insider that the company was now profitable and that he expected the company to see a 50% revenue growth in 2009.
