Happy Birthday Bun B: 40 Trill Azz Verses

MAURICEGARLAND.COM

Today Bun B of UGK is celebrating his 40th birthday. To celebrate how fie this dude has been on the mic all these years I came up with a list of what I think are 40 of his dopest verses and songs. From reading, you''re going to see some obvious songs omitted from the list. The man is a part of the Underground Kingz so I tried to make the list void of hit songs for the most part so I could fit in some personal favorites and rare country rap tunes. Right now the list is in absolutely no particular order...I might go back and do that later, this was spur of the moment. Hell I might even go back and add more. Hope you enjoy...feel free to discuss in the comments.

UGK - "One Day"
The part when the beat drops and Bun goes "my brother been, in the pen for damn near ten, but now it look like when, he come out man I''m going in" still send chills down my spine every time I hear it. Even if you don''t have a brother locked up, the way Bun illustrates that dillema should be enough for you to want to stay out.

UGK - "Diamonds and Wood"
Bun''s line "some of my sweets be tight, some of my sweets be fucked up...but all of my sweets gon'' blow so killa smoke get sucked up" can initially just be taken as a weed head line. But as you mature you take it as a real nigga version of saying "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade."

UGK - "Pocket Full Of Stones"
Bun''s opening verse on this song is probably the most recognizable opening in Southern Hip Hop outside of Scarface''s verse on "Scarface." You know what, eff that, Bun is universal...I''m putting it up there with Raekwon on "C.R.E.A.M.," Biggie on "Juicy" and Snoop on "Nuthin But G Thang." I grew up listening to all of this at the same time and gave me the same feeling.

UGK - "Tell Me Something Good"
"I seen your kind before, you''re nothing when your hands....more than a punk, but still less than a man." Even before he adopted his trademark flows, Bun always had a way of putting P.A.N.s in their place.

UGK - "High Life"
Anybody that has listened to Ridin'' Dirty over a million times will probably tell you that this is their favorite song on there even though it may not be the most popular track on there. Bun telling you that "there''s muthafuckas sleeping on those corners that you pee on" puts life and your so-called problems in perspective.

PSK-13 feat. UGK - "Like Yesterday"
Songs like this are what cements Pimp C and Bun B''s legacy as true Underground Kings. Some of their best material isn''t even on their own albums, but are features on unknown rappers'' projects. I remember feeling like THAT NIGGA when I found this song and let my friends hear it. Hell, when I actually met some dudes who had this song too...we ended up being friends for life. Bun talking about the pain of making a mother cry when she finds out what you''re doing when she isn''t around is some real shit.

Erykah Badu

NEW YORK - Soul and R&B singer Erykah Badu has paid a fine and will serve six months probation for stripping off her clothes to film a music video in Dallas, Texas, at the site where former President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, a city official said on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old music star had been charged with disorderly conduct in April over her nude video shoot in Dealey Plaza for her single "Window Seat," from her latest album New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh).

Badu agreed with prosecutors in her hometown of Dallas to serve probation that will end February 11, and she paid a $500 fine late last week, a spokesman for the city of Dallas said.

In "Window Seat," Badu sheds all her clothes throughout the course of the song as she walks and runs through the plaza. At the end, a gunshot rings out and she collapses to the ground naked, as blue blood spills out to form the word "groupthink."

Kennedy was shot in November 1963 as his motorcade passed Dealey Plaza in the city's downtown.

New for 2010, online application expands to all three events

AUSTIN, Texas - South by Southwest (SXSW) will kick off the 2010 season by extending the popular "Panel Picker" online voting application to include panel submission ideas for all three annual industry events (Music, Film, and Interactive).

The Panel Picker interface, which was launched by the Interactive Festival in 2006, received 350 entries in its inaugural year. Last season was the biggest yet, with over 1,400 submissions for the Interactive event alone. SXSW will maximize its impact by integrating the Panel Picker interface across the board, further enabling the unique SXSW opportunity for the intersection of creative and professional minds throughout all three events.

"The Panel Picker interface is a natural extension of the creative intermingling that takes place during the festival itself," says Roland Swenson, SXSW's Managing Director. "We are excited that we can provide a forum for new ideas to debut and flourish year-round."

The Panel Picker interface is essentially a two-step online application that allows the SXSW community to have a significant voice in programming. The first step is an open submission process starting June 1 and running through July 10, where we encourage the community to upload proposals for panels, discussions, mentors, demonstrations, etc. Step two, starting August 10 and running through August 28, allows the community to review all of the proposed ideas and rate the submissions they think are the best fit for the March event.

The system is accessible to all, whether a past attendee or engaged consumer, and participants will have the opportunity to submit and vote on proposals for any and all three of the events. Vote totals from the community, along with feedback from SXSW Advisory Boards and the SXSW staff, will determine the bulk of panel programming for the 2010 event. Participants who have a proposal selected will work with SXSW staff to help bring their panel to fruition.

"Our experience has proved that the Panel Picker interface is an invaluable way to connect with the thousands of professionals and informed consumers that make up the worldwide SXSW community," says SXSW Interactive Festival director, Hugh Forrest. "Not only does it help generate fresh ideas, it gives our participants an outlet to share with us what is most exciting, timely and relevant to them."

Participants can submit ideas through the Panel Picker interface by clicking here beginning June 1, 2009 and ending July 10, 2009. Additional information can be found on the Panel Picker FAQ here

The 2009 Texas Urban Music Summit (Texas U.M.S) gears up to take place June 5-7 in Dallas, TX at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel. The Texas UMS is an expansion of the Core DJ Retreat for the Texas region and is keeping true to its theme of "Celebrating The Sound". This year's event will feature a special tribute to iconic Texas label, Rap-A-Lot Records. Texas U.M.S will host a tribute honoring the Texas-based label and its history, which spans over twenty years in music business.

Over the past 20+ years, Rap-A-Lot Records has produced some of the most legendary artists out of Texas & the South as a whole. Artists such as UGK, Geto Boys, Scarface, UTP, Yukmouth, Devin the Dude and Z-Ro have been instrumental artists on the Rap-A-Lot roster, substantially shaping the sound of the south.

"You can't think about the south, Texas and celebrating our sound without thinking about Rap-A-Lot Records" says Texas U.M.S Founder & CEO, Aleshia Steele. "This label has broken so many barriers, and paved the way for Southern artists and the southern music movement as a whole. It is only right that we honor them for the contributions they have made".

For the nearly 2,000 acts performing at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, this week, the odds of success would seem insurmountable.

The music industry is a wreck and the economy is in disarray. This is not an opportune time for a band looking to land a record deal or sell a lot of records.

But economy be damned, those are among the chief goals for the flood of acts descending on Austin for the 23rd annual SXSW Music Conference and Festival. Musicians were never known for their business acumen, anyway.

"It is kind of one of those classic `Is the glass half-empty or half-full?' kind of situations and we tend to have the optimistic spirit at South by Southwest," says Brent Grulke, creative director of SXSW.

Kicking off Wednesday and running until the early hours of Sunday morning, SXSW is an oddity. For four nights, practically every venue in downtown Austin hosts shows, sandwiched together every hour and often grouped into showcases put on by record labels and sponsors.

The effect is that one walks down the main drag in Austin — 6th St. — through a cacophony: metal music behind this door, folk at the bar next door and some odd digital outfit across the street.

It's an extravagant, frenzied party that could seem incongruous to lean times. Grulke says despite economic pressures, SXSW will this year have more bands than ever before, though he did acknowledge registrations for the music conference...click to continue reading

DALLAS - Andrew Hawkins barely makes it to 5-foot-8 wearing cleats, so it's easy to see why NFL teams weren't too interested in him.

With his background as a two-way starter in college, 4.3 speed and a great smile, it's also easy to see why the little guy earned a spot on Michael Irvin's reality TV show.

Filming of "Fourth and Long" began this week and Hawkins is typical of the 12 finalists: skilled, experienced, still in his 20s, just looking for his big chance.

And eager. Very, very eager.

"I'll play left tackle if they want me to," Hawkins said Wednesday. "If they want me to walk to Oklahoma and get them cheesecake, to get on the Dallas Cowboys, that's just what I have to do."

The winner of this show indeed will be on the Dallas Cowboys; well, among the 80 guys on their training camp roster.

Landing on the final 53-man roster, or even making the practice squad, is pretty unlikely, acknowledges Joe Avezzano, one of the show's two coaches.

But the other coach, Bill Bates, is a perfect example that it can happen. He estimates there were...click to continue reading
