Damn YOU, Facebook!

Latina Comedian /Actress
Aida Rodriguez

I was first introduced to Facebook by Comedian James Hannah a few years ago, he pitched it as a more adult playground for communication and connection. And at that time it was; I reconnected with friends and even relatives enjoying the banter and fun of status updates and pictures. Then the playground started to get populated with party promoters and event planners ...and even then it was still cool to deal with events and calendars to a nominal degree.

It continued shifting gears as my numbers grew and I started to get marriage proposals from "Princes" in Africa and I mean from every region of the continent. Then one day my Facebook world changed forever...the fucking shoe people arrived and my inbox became flooded with event invites in Arkansas from local hairstylists having networking mixers in their salons. I was changed forever my friends, my world came crashing down and doom was in the air...SORRY, being dramatic can be my job at times.

Every time my computer would come on I would have been tagged with Air Force Ones with 3 inch heels...OK, let's talk about this for a second: I am a grown ass woman, and not a fashion model, which means I have NO business sporting Canary Yellow 3/4 Air Force Ones with a spiky heel, we just don't go together. I have also been tagged with Christian Louboutin for the most outrageously low prices you could ever imagine. I am from the hood so I assume EVERYTHING to be a scam until proven otherwise. I want to send Facebook a letter expressing everything that I feel and hope that you can empathize...It goes like this.

Dear Facebook,

What's up with the Bullshit? We used to be cool at a point till you let motherfuckers from my past tag me with pictures that I am ashamed of and would not like to wake up to after a long night of performing at the comedy club where 30 random assholes decided to show up at once. I resent the fact that there are more pictures of ugly ass, red bottom, ho-stroll looking shoes on my page than family members. Checking my inbox is an epic fail because "DJ Hot Shit and Them" have decided to throw a "White" party in North Carolina on Friday and guess what?? I'm invited, only I don't fucking live in North Carolina and don't plan to go there unless I fail in life. By the way, I don't like being forced to instant message with folks that I don't really know and sometimes don't like. Why are you fucking up a good thing? Let me know when you get your shit together, I will be kicking it with Twitter.

Involuntarily Tagged,

Aida

PS I would only wear these

if terrorists were holding a gun to my head and threatening to do a reality show about my real life

NEW YORK – The Broadway theater where "The Lion King" is playing dimmed its lights Tuesday night in honor of a fallen lion cub: An 11-year-old actress from the show who lost her battle with leukemia.

Shannon Tavarez died Monday afternoon at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, on Long Island, of acute myelogenous leukemia, a common type of leukemia among adults but rare among children.

"Shannon's strength and her happy, positive spirit will live on in our hearts and minds each day," her mother, Odiney Brown, said in a statement. "Shannon's dream was to perform on stage, and that she did."

The sixth-grader's battle with cancer won the hearts of many, including Alicia Keys, Rihanna and 50 Cent. The Minskoff Theatre, home of the "The Lion King," paid tribute to the actress by dimming its marquee lights.

"It is our hope that Shannon's legacy will continue to inspire other brave children battling leukemia. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers," her family said in the statement.

Shannon was forced to quit the show in April. She beat out hundreds of other hopefuls last year to earn her spot playing the lion Nala, the childhood pal of Simba, hero of "The Lion King." She split the role with another girl, performing four shows a week for six months.

Shannon had received an umbilical-cord blood transplant in August. The procedure was performed as an alternative to a bone marrow transplant. Her doctor, Dr. Larry Wolfe, said that a perfect bone marrow match for Shannon could not be found.

The search for a match was especially daunting because Shannon's mother is African-American and her father is Hispanic, from the Dominican Republic. For bone marrow transplants, minorities and those of mixed ancestry have a more difficult time finding good matches because there aren't as many people from those groups signed up as potential donors.

Right now, 83 percent of African-American patients who need marrow transplants don't find matches after six months of searching, according to the National Marrow Donor Program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping patients receive transplants.

On her website, which includes a photo of herself as Nala and a video of her singing "The Circle of Life," the 78-pound actress said, "Some people think that the test for compatibility is scary! ... All it really takes to get started is a cotton swab of the inside of your cheek.

"So please get tested today. Who knows? You might be my match. Or, you may be able to help other young people with similar illnesses. And remember... 'One swab will do the job.'"

In a hospital interview with The Associated Press after being diagnosed, the young actress talked about her love for the theater.

"It's an indescribable feeling, being on stage," she said. "I portray this character with fears, but who is so tough. I feel like that's who I am."

Her long, curly brown hair was gone because of chemotherapy, but the sixth-grader said the most difficult part was being away from acting and her friends.

Keys, Rihanna and 50 Cent campaigned to help Tavarez find a bone marrow donor, and cast members held bone marrow donor registration drives outside the play's Minskoff Theater. Katharina Harf, co-founder of the bone marrow donor center DKMS, said the donor center registered 10,000 people as potential donors. Keys skyped with Tavarez while she was at the hospital, Harf said, and the singer, Rhihanna and 50 Cent urged their fans to sign up as potential donors.

'Lion King' actress dies from leukemia

NEW YORK – Shannon Tavarez, the 11-year-old who starred on Broadway in "The Lion King" and whose battle with leukemia won the hearts of many, including Alicia Keys, Rihanna and 50 Cent, has died.

Tavarez died Monday afternoon at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, on Long Island, said Katharina Harf, co-founder of the bone marrow donor center DKMS.

Adriana Douzos, a spokeswoman for the long-running, Tony winning show, also confirmed the death but declined further comment.

Tavarez, who played the young lion Nala, had received an umbilical-cord blood transplant in August. The procedure was performed as an alternative to a bone marrow transplant. Her doctor, Dr. Larry Wolfe, said that a perfect bone marrow match for Shannon could not be found.

"So please get tested today. Who knows? You might be my match. Or, you may be able to help other young people with similar illnesses. And remember... 'One swab will do the job.'"

A blood test showed she had acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive cancer that afflicts mostly adults.

Shannon was forced to quit the show in April. She beat out hundreds of other hopefuls last year to earn her spot playing Nala, the childhood pal and girlfriend of Simba, hero of "The Lion King." She split the role with another girl, performing four shows a week for six months.

Child performers from "The Lion King" and other shows also sold bracelets and key chains that read, "Shine for Shannon," to raise money to help pay for her medical bills.

"It's rare that you meet such a spirited girl at such a young age," Harf said. "She touched so many people to register. She was really, really a special girl."

"Shannon's bright smile, amazing talent, and courage will continue to inspire us in our efforts," the New York Blood Center said in a statement.

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) – When the September issues of fashion magazines -- typically their biggest of the year, ad-wise -- hit newsstands this month, the three most prestigious ones will feature actresses in their 40s on the cover.

Vogue has booked Halle Berry, who turns 44 on Saturday; Harper's Bazaar will have 41-year-old Jennifer Aniston, promoting "The Switch"; and Elle has landed 42-year-old Julia Roberts, promoting her new film, "Eat Pray Love."

Putting these actresses on the cover of arguably the most important issue of the year sends a message that though we live in a youth-obsessed culture, there's still something to be said for the enduring appeal of women who have been in the public eye for nearly 20 years.

Laura Brown, projects/features director at Harper's Bazaar, pointed out that the average reader of the magazine is in their late 30s -- and that the readers view women like Aniston as "aspirational."

"They're cool, fashionable, interesting, compelling -- they have something to say," Brown said. "I love that they've grown into their style. One of the things about getting older is you do grow into your sense of self. You don't look victim-y anymore."

Lesley Jane Seymour, editor of More magazine, which is targeted to women in their 40s and older, echoed that sentiment.

"They're the ones with real style, real staying power, real beauty," said Seymour, who previously edited Marie Claire. "As the American population continues to grow older, everyone can relate better to a woman with a little wear on her tires."

Plus, she added, "Who is there with any kind of real style or longevity in their 30s or 20s right now? Britney Spears? Kim Kardashian? These are flashes in the pan. Many are shallow reality stars like Snooki. Style icon? Um, talk to me in a year. Frankly, it's here today, gone tomorrow. Lindsay Lohan? What's to look up to?"

The statistics for several magazines bear her out. The average age of Vogue cover models in the past year is 34.5; Harper's Bazaar, 32.5; Elle, 31.6; InStyle, 34.2; and W, 34.9. Harper's had the biggest range, putting 17-year-old Miley Cyrus on its February cover and 47-year-old Demi Moore out front in April. (Moore also graced the cover of the December issue of W; she is the oldest cover model for those five magazines.)

Data released Monday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations showed that single-copy sales of magazines dropped by 5.6% in the most recent six-month period measured. So it's ever more important for editors to select cover models who will appeal to people buying mags at newsstands, grocery stores and airports, where, of course, they pay full price. And in that context, older women can seem a safer bet, appealing to a wider audience -- and a wider magazine-buying audience -- than, say, a younger reality show star, singer or actress.

Indeed, it might seem as if the "Twilight" films have taken over the zeitgeist, but those movies' twentysomething stars don't come close to the star power of older actresses. At 46, Sandra Bullock is now the highest-earning woman in Hollywood, according to Forbes; she made $56 million last year with "The Proposal" and "The Blind Side." Rounding out the top five were two actresse

The curtains may have closed on the 82nd annual Academy Awards, but the celebration has just gotten under way for Mo'Nique's big win Sunday night (March 7).

The outspoken actress saw years of hard work pay off when she took home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her groundbreaking performance as an abusive mother in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire." Just like when Will Smith, Denzel Washington and Halle Berry took home Hollywood's most coveted prize, Mo'Nique's shining moment was celebrated throughout the hip-hop community.

"Go Mo go!!!" Diddy wrote on Twitter. "Congrats!!!! Let's go!"

"CONGRATULATIONS MoNIQUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Nicki Minaj tweeted.

"From Soul Plane to winning an Oscar!" radio personality Ed Lover marveled on Twitter. "Congrats Mo'Nique! We are soo proud of you!"

"I'm glad Mo'Nique won," Q-Tip added. "She's a cool down to earth woman."

"Congratulations Monique!" Soulja Boy Tell'em wrote. "You are a queen."

But Mo'Nique's big night wasn't just about her win. Her emotional acceptance speech brought the audience at the Kodak Theatre to their feet.

"I would like to thank the Academy for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics," Mo'Nique said. "To my amazing husband, Sidney - thank you for showing me...More MO'NIQUE

NEW YORK - For someone about to make her stage debut, Ashanti appears eerily relaxed.

The Grammy-winning singer and actress exudes a sense of calm during a lunch break from vigorous rehearsals for the New York City Center revival of "The Wiz." Not a drop of sweat - nor hint of nerves - can be detected as the fresh-faced, bubbly 28-year-old gabs excitedly about playing Dorothy in the rock-soul version of the classic L. Frank Baum tale.

But don't be fooled: She's working hard to fill those famed ruby red slippers. Her skills as singer, actor and dancer are being put to the test as the clock winds ever closer to Friday's first preview performance. The show officially opens June 18 for a run through July 5.

"It's a lot," says Ashanti, sporting a yellow T-shirt, jeans, sneakers and large gold hoop earrings. "It really is. When we first took the project on (in early May), I said, `Wait a minute. Is this the real start date?' ... I thought it was a lot to learn in such a little time and, when you first look at the script, it's very very overwhelming."

Ashanti knows a thing or two about Dorothy Gale: She portrayed the character in 2005 in the TV movie "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz." Still, she was initially nervous about how the seasoned cast of "The Wiz" would accept her as a non-stage actress and newcomer. (Ashanti has two multiplatinum albums under her belt, and has appeared in the movies "Coach Carter" and "John Tucker Must Die").

"It's a little cliquey," she says. "Broadway has, you know, the Broadway crowd! ... So coming into it, you're like, `OK, I hope everyone is cool and down to Earth,' so I was very happy and excited to learn that everybody's all cool."

Ashanti's cast mates include Orlando Jones as The Wiz and LaChanze as Glinda the Good Witch. LaChanze, a Tony winner for "The Color Purple," encouraged Ashanti to experiment with the role and try new things.

"Everyone is gelling really well, we're laughing and joking and it just feels really good," Ashanti says. "Because it's like teamwork: Everyone wants everyone to do well, and they're fully supportive. Any questions that I have they're like, `I got you!'"

According to director Thomas Kail, Ashanti has been fully committed.

"That sense of calm is partly because she's prepared," Kail says. "And she's prepared to do things in one way and then can stop on a dime, and do them the other way " and is very open to taking direction and to considering new ideas and new objectives within a moment."

The acting process comes easily " as a repeat Dorothy, she's been down that Yellow Brick Road before " and she draws upon her personal journey from young pop sensation to blossoming adult.

Ashanti, whose most successful album was her 2002 namesake debut, which had the R&B hit "Foolish," says she was a little naive starting out in the entertainment business but gradually learned to "stay away from the monkeys and away from the witches."

But in "The Wiz," it's not wicked witch Evillene that gives her trouble. It's memorizing the music.

"When I'm singing someone else's (songs), I got to remember - you know - the lyrics!" says Ashanti, who studied up on the role by listening to recordings by Stephanie Mills, who starred in the original 1975 production. Her favorite number is the R&B-tinged duet "Be a Lion."

When the show closes, Ashanti will head to the studio.

"You always have to be thinking about the next move," she says. "If I am laying up watching TV, I'm subconsciousl
