Black Panther Proves It's Deeper Than Superhero Flicks, Claws Down All-Time Movie Releases Record

Marvel Studios' Black Panther is building up more anticipation than most movie execs could have ever expected. A new Fandango report claims the must-see action flick is currently outpacing all first quarter film releases in advance ticket sales.

According to a new Fandango press release, Black Panther is pacing itself to either tie or blow beyond past first quarter heavyweights like 2012's The Hunger Games and 2017's Beauty and the Beast in presales.

Fandango is reporting that presales for Marvel’s “Black Panther,” opening February 16, are outpacing presales for all other first quarter movie releases the company’s 18-year history. At the same point in the Fandango sales cycle, “Black Panther” is on track to leap past the January-March presales record-holders, "The Hunger Games” (2012) and "Beauty and the Beast” (2017), respectively. It is also pacing to be Fandango’s top preseller among all superhero titles. “It’s not just a superhero movie, it’s a ground-breaking cultural event,” says Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis. “It is hands-down the first major movie event of 2018, and the ecstatic reviews are fueling even greater anticipation. We’re also seeing increased interest from larger groups of ticket-buyers looking to celebrate next weekend’s historic release.” (Fandango Press Release)

Chadwick Boseman’s Instagram spiked, adding 26,7K new fans yesterday as well. Views on YouTube are spread across owned and earned clocking over 6M views over 48-hours. Compared to other Marvel titles, Black Panther, as a first in a franchise, is tracking ahead of the Social Media Universe of other Marvel sequel openers with a 741 million SMU versus Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (607M SMU), Captain America: Civil War (599M SMU) and Thor: Ragnarok (560M SMU) when they opened. Last week, "Insecure" star Issa Rae shared an epic reaction to seeing Black Panther at its world premiere.

"Ohhh! Black Panther, Black Panther, Black Panther, Black Panther - I'm pregnant. The movie impregnated me. Chad Boseman could get it. Michael B. Jordan is the best villain I have ever seen in my life. He could also get it. F*ck me up. ... And you know what else? I love Blank Man. I love Meteor Man. But even those movies treated our heros like a joke and Black Panther didn't play that. It was just black excellence. Black heros. Black women - all I know is I'm inspired and every other creator I saw tonight was also inspired. So I can't wait to see what this sh*t spawns. I can't wait to spawn some sh*t. Ryan Coogler. Incredible cast. Incredible producer."
