Memorial Services are being held in Perry, FL for legendary Music Promoter and Radio Broadcaster James "Jay Baby" Robinson on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at Stewart Memorial A.M.E. in Perry, FL.
Jay Baby began promoting music as the owner of Jay's Records in Orlando, FL that serviced the African-American communities in the entire central Florida area for over 20 years. Jay Baby's Records provided many live events for the community to meet recording acts and view performances of some of the greatest artists of that era including Aretha Franklin, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Issac Hayes, Nancy Wilson, 4 Tops, Dionne Warwick, Spinners, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Temptations, Freda Payne, and many more.
As a Music Promoter, Jay Baby booked concerts and community events throughout the South East United States including James Brown, Ike & Tine Turner, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Etta James, Brook Benton, Wilson Pickett, Buddy Miles, Tyrone Davis, Buddy McKnight, among other notable acts.
Jay Baby was best known for his daily WOKB radio show "Live and In Color" broadcast throughout central Florida. Jay Baby's show aired over a decade throughout the 1960's and early 70's and was the only radio station at that time to play Soul Music in the entire state of Florida expanding into the South East US.
Other notable WOKB on air jocks included Joe Bullard, Marvin Zanders, Nick Mickels, Guy Rozier and Melvin Grace, each with their own show collectively broadcasting and promoting Soul, Gospel, Jazz, Blues and Funk music formats 24/7.
Their contribution to "Southern Soul Music" was invaluable to up and coming African-American music artists and promoting independent labels that included Motown/Tamla Records, Chess Records, Stax, Philadelphia International, Solar Records, Roulette Records and many others without distribution.
"My Father's life was music and music was his life and his legacy to Soul Music is historic and will live on", a statement from his son, Ira Robinson "I thank everyone so much for the love shown through letters, cards and phone calls and am so grateful for the messages of love and condolences we have received since my Dad's passing and he will truly be missed."
Jay Baby's youngest daughter Victoria Robinson goes on to say "My Dad is best man that has ever been in my life, he was my father, my friend, and myeverything. I will miss his funny and cool personality and I love him and will always keep him in my heart forever more."
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. at Stewart Memorial A.M.E., 1107 W. Hampton Springs Road, Perry, FL 32347, Ph. - (850) 584-2972
