I think learning ASL or any sign language for that matter is crucial. We often think Deafness is far from us, when in reality, it's really next door neighbors with us. Anyone can become Deaf or experience some degree of hearing loss at anytime for any reason. Wouldn't it make sense to be prepared ? Not saying that YOU will eventually have hearing loss, but you never know if it'll be your friend, your aunt, your cousin, your mom... you just never know
There's so many Deaf people we may encounter, but have no idea that they're Deaf. How so? Well, because unfortunately, as people, we only focus on ourselves. ASL is the 2nd most use language in the US (some sources say 3rd, but the DEAF sources say 2nd lol). This means, we need to do better as a society of making access to communication equal for all.
