Jay-Z Joins Weed Business, Partners With Cannabis Company In California
Jay-Z is taking on another venture and joining the marijuana business! He's been named the Chief Brand Strategist for Caliva, a privately-owned cannabis company in San Jose, California. He's already signed on to a multi-year partnership. The key part of his role will be to assist with social justice issues over the legalization of marijuana. He's also set to help with job training for former inmates and push strategies that will improve the representation of the previously incarcerated in the weed industry.
Jay-Z explained why he contacted the company in his search for a partnership in the marijuana field.
"Anything I do, I want to do correctly and at the highest level. With all the potential in the cannabis industry, Caliva's expertise and ethos make them the best partners for this endeavor. We want to create something amazing, have fun in the process, do good and bring people along the way."
And the feeling is mutual. Caliva's CEO Dennis O'Malley added,
"For Jay-Z to seek out Caliva as a partner is humbling and confirms our mission of being the most trusted name in cannabis. To find that we were in complete alignment around our values and ethos was just a home run. We believe this partnership is unparalleled in this or any business and we could not be more pleased to be working with him and have him as our Chief Brand Strategist."
He's following in the footsteps of Snoop Dogg, who joined the weed industry in 2015 with the release of his brand Leafs by Snoop, and Whoopi Goldberg, who released her line of medical marijuana products in hopes of improving cramps during a woman's menstrual cycle.
Jay-Z is no stranger to social reform. Just earlier this year he launched Reform Alliance with Meek Mill, Van Jones, Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, and BrooklynNets co-owner Clara Wu Tsai. Their goal is to free 1 million inmates within the next five years.
Let's not forget Forbes also named Jay-Z Hip-Hop's first billionaire last month thanks to his things like his Roc Nation label, art collection and of course his music library.
