More About Gotham CitiComprised of four young men from New York, the members of Gotham Citi possess vocals with the power to ignite the soul. Jonathan, Dijuan, Clif and CJ are all driven by a strong desire to take R & B back to its roots while infusing it with what's relevant today in music, combining a soulful quality with street edge and a hint of pop. Each member has both a unique personality and voice, which brings an eclectic and harmonious feel to their songs, providing a rich sound. Gotham Citi‘s sole purpose is to maintain the integrity of music and stay true to the notion of pure, raw talent all the while adding their own unique texture. “We want to leave an imprint on music, something the world can remember us for.”
All four members have a rich musical background and history that has been the foundation for their endeavors. At a very young age, each was exposed to music through friends and family members. DiJuan was entered into talent competitions as a child by an uncle when he noticed his nephews affinity for performing. CJ on the other hand, at the age of twelve, was enrolled into the school for the Boys Choir of Harlem, where he went on to tour domestically and internationally. As the son of a local church Bishop in Brooklyn, Clif had been thrust into the musical spotlight at the tender age of four where he was heavily exposed to Gospel. The church nurtured his skills as a vocalist, along with his mother who was the choir director. And Finally, Jonathan at five years old was gifted a Jackson 5 cd by his grandmother, and it soon became evident that he was destined to sing, he first took the stage starring in a Disney play put on by his kindergarten class.
Although New York is a very large city, the music community is very small, particularly when an individual has immense talent, they are bound to become known through word of mouth. This is the case with the members of Gotham Citi, each person's reputation had preceded him, and in their pursuit of music, eventually, they all met.
DiJuan and Clif were the first to begin working together, to make ends meet, they would ride the New York City subway during rush hour singing acappella versions of both classic and original songs, while continuing to chase their dream of making it big in the music business. They were determined, and nothing was going to stop them. Eventually, as a friend of DiJuan, CJ expressed his desire to get involved, and was invited to join. The three continued to polish their sound and look for any opportunity to progress in music. They began to build their skills as vocalists, writers, and producers, using any and all resources put before them, “hitting the streets” in order to produce and obtain new music, squeeze in studio time, and find opportunities to perform. Music had become their life.
Over the next several months, they had many ups and downs, introducing various new members on occasion, who never seemed to quite fit. Dijuan, CJ and Clif always had a strong desire to add a fourth member, which led them to begin an exhaustive search for a strong fourth vocalist. While many talented people auditioned, they eventually came to realize that they already knew one who would be ideal. A mutual friend and writer, Tish suggested they reach out to a well-known vocalist from Brooklyn, Jonathan Levant who was asked to audition for the group; he would be the missing piece to this musical puzzle. His powerful vocals and personality instantly fit with the other three, the chemistry was perfect. It was as though he had always been there and as a welcome addition, solidified the four -part harmony they sought. Gotham Citi was born.
Since coming together, Gotham Citi has been working diligently to deliver the sound that will re-define today's music. Their influences can be heard laced throughout their music and combine such elements as Pop, R & B, Gospel, and Hip-Hop.
