Fatima's boyfriend, Ephraim hasn't asked for her hand in marriage after five years of dating. Fatima has to follow her instincts as she moves into her destiny. How did you come up with idea for this book? My inspiration behind Marvelous Are Thy Works is that I identify with my protagonist Fatima Williams as I love encouraging African American women to accept and wear their natural hair. Like Fatima, I have worked in real estate, was formerly a vegetarian and I have dated an African man. She and I have a few things in common. What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book? I had no idea in the beginning how long it would take me to complete my book. I worked on my novella for over two years. Why do you write? For me, writing is spiritual. I pray before I sit down to write. I ask God for direction and for him to use me as a vessel to bless and inspire others. What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book? I want enlightened African American women about going natural as it is a personal choice. I hope my readers resonate with my protagonist, Fatima Williams who is a visionary and pursues her passion. I believe that Fatima is relatable to most women who want a prosperous life filled with success, love and happiness. Who are your favorite authors? I enjoy reading inspirational authors such as Bishop TD Jakes, Joyce Meyer, Beth Moore and Joel Osteen. However, some of my favorite fictional authors are Lori Tharps, Norma L. Jarrett and Rhonda McKnight. What book(s) are you reading now? I've been studying my pastor Bishop T.D. Jakes's book called Instinct. What books have most influenced your life? I read the Bible to study the word of God which gives me strength and revelation. Also, another book that has influenced me is by R.G. LeTourneau called Mover of Men and Mountains. I read the book while I was a student at LeTourneau University. The book taught me how to use biblical principles in my business engagements and in building relationships. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? I am a fan of author, Lori Tharps. I read her books: Kinky Gazpacho and Hair Story, Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America while I was going natural several years ago. I was inspired by her books. During that time, I was researching answers for my hair loss and breakage due to chemical relaxers. Any advice to give to aspiring writers? My advice is to go for it! We all have a story to tell.

AN EXCERPT: Marvelous Are Thy Works, a Novella by Meiah Shaun Chapter 1 All Natural Hair Salon's busiest time was the first weekend of the month. Fatima made it to the salon at ten o'clock that morning. After parking her car in front of the salon, she noticed Lauryn and Sheba were already inside. The front window shades were pulled back and the lights were on. "Good morning, ladies," Fatima said as she walked through the door. "Good morning, Fatima," Lauryn answered, while sashaying to her workstation in her high heels and locs pulled back into a lobster tail style. Always the diva, Lauryn appeared to be in a good mood and eager to work. "Hey, girl, you finally made it in," Sheba said as she sorted through her laundry bag of towels. Her hair was loose in a kinky and curly twist-out hairstyle. She was dressed comfortably in white skinny jeans. "Are there any messages for me?" Fatima asked. "A young lady called to make an appointment. She requested a low maintenance hairstyle." "What time did she call?" Fatima inquired. "She called a few minutes before you walked in," Lauryn replied. "She said her name was Danielle Evans." "Did she leave her phone number?" "I put it on your desk," she said. Fatima continued to her station so she could check her itinerary for the day. It was unusually free. "I'll just work a half day and meet up with my honey later," she told her co-workers. Fatima then sat in her chair and started daydreaming about the day she would become Mrs. Ephraim Okoye. She could not wait to see him. "Ladies, what are your plans today?" Fatima questioned. "I have a couple of appointments for locs retightening, and I got a new client scheduled this morning. He's a chef and new in town." Lauryn smirked while doing a shimmy with her shoulders to show her excitement. "A new male client? Girl, you be pullin' the men," teased Sheba. "I need to pull a husband." "Baby, I met my husband when I wasn't even lookin'. I was minding my own business down at the Farmer's Market and--" Lauryn rolled her eyes. "Sheba, you've told that story so many times," she said, cutting Sheba off and looking down at her iPad to show her disinterest in hearing it again. Sheba walked over to Lauryn and tapped her on the knee with her forefinger. "When you least expect it, that's when you're gonna meet him. It happened to me, girl!" "I wish God would hurry up and send him!" Lauryn snipped. "Most married people forget what it's like to be single, so it's easy for them to tell someone else to be patient." "That's not true," Sheba replied. Fatima butted in. "Some women who are married have never had to experience being single for long." "Don't you just hate that, girl?" Lauryn said. I was given this assignment to write a book and I thought to myself this has to be me saying this, surely God would not be telling me to write a book. Plus what would I have to write about anyway, I am not an expert on anything, what could I possibly write that would inspire or help another human being. So, I did what most people do, I disregarded the thought of this potential book. But like any assignment that God gives me to do, it would not leave my spirit, so I began to pray about it. Seeking God's opinion on this book, I remember praying, "okay God, if this is truly what you want me to do, then would you at least give me the subject matter of this book?" Not long after that it was revealed to me what God wanted to say to you through this book What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book? In order to write this book it meant writing about some things in my life, that were unpleasant. This of course was something I didn't want to do. The thought of knowing that people would have all my stuff in their hands was a sincere challenge. But God reminded me that not only does he want to free you but he wants to free me as well. Why do you write? I write now because I am so clear of the fact that God wants us to be healed in every area of our lives, He wants us to know what he said through David in Psalm 147 is real, "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." He wants to bless us with the freedom to experience the joy, peace and happiness that we so desperately desire to experience. What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book? The Purposed Driven Life, by Rick Warren was one of the first books I read when I got sober and it gave me the inspiration to find a path to not only just be sober, but to be sober with a purpose! If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? I would choose Iyanla Vanzant, being able to help others at a greater level with changing the behavior and thought process of others is an amazing gift. Not just a gift to have the ability to assist someone in that area, but a gift to the individual who is able to receive it. Any advice to give to aspiring writers? Listen to your inner voice allowing God to lead you in your writing, along with making a commitment to your writing. To the Wounded Warrior was born out of my heart for the purpose of being read as a healing guidebook for those who have been in abusive situations, especially within the Church and weren't able to talk about it or be heard. Madelyn, tell us about your book? Well! "Tarnished Dreams" started out a journal entry after I had lost custody of my Son, splitting our 2 children at early ages (Daughter 3 and Son 4)! I had prayed about it through out along with my church family and friends. God said no! HE had another plan! This story is a short form of my Journey as a Single Mother and Believer. A story I live daily because it keeps me encouraged to go on, a reminder that life will get hard, but it is preparation for what's ahead. About a year later things began to get very challenging and a child I was taught "What happened in the past stays in the past!" So much of my life I had to just handle the things in my life and I became very dependent on GOD! So on that night after my son was taken from me, I sat at my Word processor at the time! (lol) and I began to write my feelings down and crying the entire time. I didn't realize that it would later be a novel (almost 20 years later). Sharing my Journey one Novel at a time! How did you come up with idea for this book?
The idea came when I was much younger and I wanted to do something to help others know that you can make it! I became very ill in 2011 and lost my jobs, for a year I could barely walk without assistance, I spoke as though I was Special, I could barely hold my head up without assistance for about 7 months and I was have 2 to 5 seizures a week! After losing my job and unable to keep a job because if this Season in my life! Things began to look very slim. I prayed for GOD to Move in a mighty way because I was about to be evicted, Income was slim (Savings/401k depleted, checking overdrawn). I was on a pray call as was told that my story was to be published! Tarnished Dreams had been sitting, drawing dust for about 12 years at this time. So I reluctantly moved forward in publishing! God Sent, person after person to help with little to no cost and within 38 days I was a Published Author! My life was literally an "Open Book"! What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book? The most difficult aspect of writing this book was the Emotions that went with all the Editing and Editing and still Editing! Seriously.. I had zero experience of what to do or how to go about being a Author! Although this part of my life was over and the outcome is Amazing the memories were very challenging at times! I was Mentally exhausted some nights because I had to pray continuously so that I would not get pulled into the moment while writing and adding to each chapter. I had not intention to deface anyone so it was difficult to leave out a lot of things that had occurred and have the story make sense and keep the interest of the reader. Forgiveness was required in the process because I had moved forward from all that had happened in those 18 years! Why do you write? I write to clear my head of the things God has assigned me to do! Ideas, Poems, Sayings and Devotionals! There are so many circumstances, situations and heartaches I have gone through starting at a very young age! God has been the only one for me to share with, my most painful and difficult times in my life. He has walked me through each and every on of them! I would write to know that I am not crazy, if something were to happen to me that my story would be told. The secrets that I was taught should never be told because we were Christians! I battled with this for years and I promised myself that I would remember without hurting so that when my children would not have to carry that load, that burden with them for the rest of their lives! I write because my life is not my Own but the LORDS! My purpose, the reason my life has been kept by HIS Hand is so I can help, encourage and inspire others to KEEP GOING in Christ! What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book? Valuable Lessons I want readers to learn from "Tarnished Dreams" and all that follows! To know that in spite of the choices we make in life and the consciences we endure, whatever journey you are on (divorce, single parenting, abuse, illness, addictions). The path you are traveling, KNOW that God has a plan and He knows what He is doing! To accept and receive Christ as your Savior will require hard, painful events in your life or someone around you! Pray Continuously, Pay Attention to the Voice of God, Trust your Spirit and Be excited to know God LOVE is ETERNAL! I need you to know our lives are not our own and sometimes our Dreams will become Tarnished. Stay focused on the LIFE He has given you and your PURPOSE for Living! I need each of them to see The Strength of a Relationship with a Living and Loving GOD! Who are your favorite authors? Who are my favorite Authors... Wow! That's a hard question! If I had to choose a Favorite it would have to be John C Maxwell! His view on Leadership is great! Max Lucado "Just like Jesus", T. D Jakes "Instinct" and Percilla Shirer "Discerning the voice of GOD" (Great Read/Study) What book(s) are you reading now? The book I'm currently reading or studying is more like it is "Living Beyond Yourself" by Beth Moore What books have most influenced your life? The Books that have most influenced my life are of course the Holy Bible it is a Guide I have used in every situation of my life! "Jesus Calling" Devotional by Sarah Young, "Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren and "Experiencing God" Study Book by Blackaby & King! "Discerning to Voice of God" by Percilla Shirer. Just to name a few! If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? If I had to choose only one writer as a Mentor it would have to be Sarah Young! She is truly inspired by the True Word and Spirit! She inspires me to know that the Word of God is without a Doubt the Guide in Life Daily if we allow Him to Lead us as He promised! "I will never leave you nor forsake you I am with you even to the end of the earth!" Matthew 28:16-20 Any advice to give to aspiring writers? The advice I would give aspiring authors is to START and FINISH! No matter how challenging it is or becomes, complete your assignment! (Tell your story!) She is the newest book reviewer for Prophetic Worship Intensive Christ Unit (PWICU); a faith based Radio and TV media platform. She is also the founder of Virtuous Ink Publishing LLC where she seeks to provide her readers with the best in contemporary Christian literature. Cassietta earned her Bachelors of Applied Science in Business Administration from Wayland Baptist University and after traveling the country currently resides in Las Vegas Nevada. She is married to a proud retired United States Air Force Master Sergeant and together they have raised three children. Cassietta the youngest of ten siblings; seven older brothers and two older sisters who in addition to her wonderful parents help to shape her life. In 2012, Cassietta published her first novel, Be Still & Know and published a novella, Timing is everything, the following year. Her latest book, Shades of Brown, is now available in print and ebook versions. Author Cassietta, tell us about your book?
Shades of Brown is actually a combination of interwoven short stories that have been compiled into one book. It tells the story of four women who have managed to remain friends throughout the many twists and turns their life has taken. Where we meet these women in the book, they're facing some challenges that manage to turn their lives upside down. Shades of Brown is not necessarily about the challenges, but more so about how they face those challenges. How did you come up with ideas for this book? I was at breakfast with a couple of my girlfriends here in Las Vegas, circa 2007 (there's actually an acknowledgment to them in the book) and we were sharing and talking and laughing...all the things that girlfriends do when they get together. I remember having the thought, man, I wish I could bottle this [feeling, friendship, love] and keep with me. On the drive home I thought more about our friendship and thought, how fabulous my little circle of friends was. I started to consider how we were all different we all were in terms of our lives, the things we brought to the table, our physical appearances...how we were all different "shades of brown" yet we managed to gel. I didn't use any of our specific issues for the purposes of the book, but I did use the way we handled our issues. How we shared them, prayed for each other, offered advice and council; I took all of that and Shades of Brown was born. What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book? The stories on their own came pretty naturally; what I found difficult was intertwining them and making them connect. Why do you write? Is it something you've always done, or always wanted to do? Or is it something that you started fairly recently? It's something I've always done; I can remember crafting stories as far back as middle school, but I never thought I was good enough to ever be an author. I had stacks of books in my room that I would read over and over again and I always wanted to see my name on the cover of a book that people love and want to read over and over again. I never thought it would happen so I didn't take it seriously...I even threw away my note book when someone found it in high school and made fun of it. I just picked up my pen again, so to speak, about 15 years ago while I was living in Texas. Who are your favorite authors? Oh, so many! Let's see, my absolute favorite is the late Francis Ray. She inspired me so much with her classy, classic style of writing and just her amazing story telling. I love also Jodi Picoult; I just "discovered"her a few years ago and I love her work. I also love Walter Mosley, James Patterson, Brenda Jackson, Nora Roberts, Eric Jerome Dickey. I also have a couple of Indie favorites like Dominique Wilkins, Tabitha Vinson, and Tamika Sims to name just a few. Looking at this list you can tell how eclectic my book shelf is, but I love reading almost as much as I love writing and so I read a little bit of everything. What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book? The focus of this book and message behind all of the stories here is that whatever you're facing, you can get through it. It may be hard and even seem impossible, but with God all things are possible; that's the ultimate message. I learned a long time ago to take everything to God in prayer, so when I'm faced with a problem or something I'm not sure what to do with, I pray and talk to God about it. I wanted to pass along that advice through the pages of this book. Any advice to give to aspiring writers? Keep working on your craft and never give up your dream! Delmar, tell us about your book?
Seasons of My Soul is about overcoming and having the tenacity to keep moving forward, even at times when I felt there was little hope to get through being unstuck, struggling with depression, toxic relationships and financial failures. It speaks of the lessons I learned as I got on the other side of each of those experiences and pass any shame or embarrassment that was illuminated in my own mind. How did you come up with ideas for this book? It all came from me journaling for so many years and I saw writing this book as another way of journaling; only this time I allowed others to join me along the ride with more intimate details of what was in my mind, heart and soul as I journeyed through times in my life that had a significant impact What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book? I found the most difficult part of writing the book was remembering the parts that left emotional and mental scars. Going back to some experiences had me right back in the moment as though it was happening in that moment of writing about it. However once it was written down it no longer held any power. Why do you write? Writing for me has always been therapeutic. I've been writing by way of journaling thoughts for more than 15 years. And I picked up that habit once I moved out of town from my family and friends to pursue my career. Who are your favorite authors? I actually don't have a particular favorite author, however I do like books written from a spiritual, personal and professional development point of view, and some of those authors from that genre that I enjoy include, TD Jakes, Joyce Meyers, John Maxwell, and Rick Warren; also, Napoleon Hill, Jay Levinson, Steven Covey What books have most influenced your life? If I had to choose, it would be TD Jakes, because I enjoy how he pulls the spiritual and real life matters together, creating a visual picture of what he talks about and how it resonates with the reader within as you apply the principles and lessons in your own life. What book are you reading now? I am currently reading Instinct: The Power to Unleash Your Inborn Drive by T.D. Jakes and I Declare: 31 Promises to Speak Over Your Life by Joel Osteen What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book? The lessons I believe readers will be able to take from this book is, (1) that you don't have to stay in the place in which you have fallen, (2) that there is absolute power in forgiving and letting go of past hurts, and (3) that it's important to surround yourself with people that support you to renew within you a sense of hope Any advice to give to aspiring writers? To not give up and get organized. Write by creating some structure around it including, writing an outline of thoughts, use color note-cards of the potential topics and what points you want to write about each point, schedule your writing time and stick to it. Additionally, begin building a platform prior to finishing and launching your book; this helps to create momentum among your current and potential audience.
