Baby Doll: The Best Kept Secret

In Black Music, "The City of Brotherly Love" has given the world the best music that it has to offer. When "Baby Doll" was born in the early 80's, the city birthed and blessed the child who was set to make an impact in the music industry. While disco and the other genres of black music were fading in 1985, a new culture called Hip Hop was emerging. The timing was impeccable for Baby Doll, it was impossible for her to escape the culture let alone her destiny.

Maybe that's the reason why hip hop runs as pure as the blood in her veins. At the age of five, she began rocking mics and moving crowds similar to her adult counterparts. She won her first contest at an Easter "Kiddie Hop" Party which was her first foray into her rap career. Baby Doll's early years proved a vivid forecast into her future as a female emcee. Inspired by the likes of Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, Notorious B.I.G., Queen Latifah and Philly native Eve, she embodies their principles of staying true to one's self.

As she grew older, she honed her skills to make her mark on the local rap scene and soon the world. In February of 2001, she performed at the world–famous Apollo Theater in New York City. Rocking the mic at the Apollo gave her the confidence to move full steam ahead as a performer. Soon after, Baby Doll worked the local showcase circuit in Philly. In 2000, she performed at a Midtown Records talent search and two years later she appeared in showcases for Epic and Sony Records. Most recently, in July of 2007, she won the Freestyle Friday rap competition for the Philadelphia leg of BET's 106th & Park Tour. Also, in 2007, she received a nomination for "Artist of the Year" in the Philadelphia Hip Hop Awards.

Baby Doll has a distinct sound which she describes as, "... a very catchy Philly/Down South rap style that separates me from the others." She possesses a confidence in her flow that allows her to switch between battle rapper, songwriter and chart-topper. It's a captivating transition that leaves listening ears addicted to her sound. How does she feel about it? Her response can best be described in one of her wittiest punch lines, "people in wheel chairs give me standing ovations..." Arrogance? No. Baby Doll is using one of her many clever punch-lines to describe the loyalty from her fans.

As her resume confirms, she is a dedicated individual. That dedication is most prevalent when it comes to writing and producing her own music. She says, "I can write hits and I won't stop working hard. Most importantly it's only me (doing most of the production), and that will always (make me) be original." Her focus and drive are what keep her motivated to pursue a career as a recording artist. Baby Doll is also focused on carrying the torch for her city to keep female emcees from Philadelphia on the map. Now, she is ready to take everything to the next level. The world will soon see what Philly's known all along – she is Philly's "Best Kept Secret."
