The Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball was held on January 20 at the Harman Center for the Arts in Washington, DC. Artists like 2 Chainz, MC Lyte, Meek Mill and John Legend were honored with awards. John Legend also stated that he believes Hip-Hop helped Barack Obama become President of the United States.

The 2013 BET Honors took place in Washington, D.C. on Sat night. The event which celebrates distinguished African Americans performing at exceptional levels in the areas of music, literature, entertainment, media, service and education also brought out our favorite style stars.

LL Cool J paid homage in remarks to Chris Lighty, who he says helped shape his career and many others in hip-hop. After Cool J spoke, rappers Q-Tip, Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott and 50 Cent took the stage to perform.
The show was highlighted by several freestyle sessions that included rapper T.I., B.o.B., Snoop Dogg, E-40 and Cassidy. Others who performed included Rick Ross, Diddy, 2 Chainz and Future.
T.I. presented legendary rapper Rakim with the "I Am Hip-Hop Icon" honor. 2 Chainz won the People's Choice award, and Kendrick Lamar came away with Lyricist of the Year award.
An altercation between Young Jeezy and Rick Ross happened backstage. Police spokesman Carlos Campos said officers responded to the scuffle at around 7:30 p.m. Campos said there were no injuries or shots fired.

This year's ceremony honored ESPN's commitment to The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a partnership launched with late NCAA basketball coach Jim Valvano at the first ESPY Awards ceremony in 1993.

This year's Essence Music Festival was the 18th anniversary of the event, which features nightly concerts at the Superdome and free, daily "empowerment" seminars and community events at the city's convention center.
A fourth day was added this year to focus on youth and the next generation of stars, including Diggy Simmons, the OMG Girlz and Roshon Fegan.
Headliners included Aretha Franklin, Charlie Wilson, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Trey Songz, Chaka Khan, Fantasia, comedian Kevin Hart and D'Angelo.
