The 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards was recorded in Atlanta on Saturday and there were several memorable moments at the event.

LL Cool J paid homage in remarks to Chris Lighty, who he says helped shape his career and many others in hip-hop. After Cool J spoke, rappers Q-Tip, Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott and 50 Cent took the stage to perform.

The show was highlighted by several freestyle sessions that included rapper T.I., B.o.B., Snoop Dogg, E-40 and Cassidy. Others who performed included Rick Ross, Diddy, 2 Chainz and Future.

T.I. presented legendary rapper Rakim with the "I Am Hip-Hop Icon" honor. 2 Chainz won the People's Choice award, and Kendrick Lamar came away with Lyricist of the Year award.

An altercation between Young Jeezy and Rick Ross happened backstage. Police spokesman Carlos Campos said officers responded to the scuffle at around 7:30 p.m. Campos said there were no injuries or shots fired.

The 41st Annual Legislative Conference ended the weekend with the Phoenix Awards Gala.

First Lady Michelle Obama delivered the keynote address. Her speech marks the first time ever that a first lady has addressed the prestigious gathering.

The Phoenix Award symbolizes the immortality of the human spirit and an eternal desire to reach its full potential. Four distinguished individuals will receive the prestigious award:

U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. received The CBCF Chair's Award. The award is presented to an individual whose work and accomplishments stand as a role model for the African-American community and the African Diaspora.

Writer, director George Lucas received The CBC Chair's Award. The award is presented to an individual who exhibits the highest standards of dedication, ability and creativity.

Representative Corrine Brown of Florida and the first African American Mayor of Charlotte, NC, the Honorable Harvey Gantt each received The Harold Washington Award. The award is presented to an individual who has contributed immeasurably to African-American political awareness, empowerment and the advancement of minorities in the electoral process.

Essence & Southern Company hosted the 4th Annual Evening of Excellence on Friday, Sept 21 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington DC.

The awards reception is part of the 2012 Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's (CBCF) 42nd Annual Legislative Conference.

This year's reception honored some of today's most influential leaders and advocates of change in the areas of education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) including: actress and education advocate Alfre Woodard; Xavier University president Dr. Norman C. Francis; Alabama A&M University president Dr. Andrew Hugine, Jr.; and The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl writer and creator Issa Rae.

The event was hosted by CNN news anchor Fredricka Whitfield.
