COMMON Attends White House Event Despite Criticism

Despite the best efforts of right-wing pundits and contradicting earlier reports, Common went through with his White House appearance at Michelle Obama's poetry event Wednesday.

Earlier reports suggested that he wasn't there, but a White House video confirms that he showed up later than expected.

The Daily Caller earlier reported that he wasn't in attendance at the afternoon session, saying that when the first lady welcomed the poets who had been invited, she neglected to mention Common, and reporters did not see him at the event. But he apparently showed up for the evening session and even tweeted about his presence there.

It was revealed a few days ago that Common was among the poets that Obama had invited to her poetry session, and the Drudge Report and others immediately noted the rapper's history of violent lyrics, notably directed at police officers. He's also rapped his advice to "Burn a Bush," a reference to President George W. Bush.

Among those critical of the invitation were Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Beck ridiculed the White House invitation Wednesday morning on his radio show, for example, by saying, sarcastically, "The president and the first lady, of course - of course - are not anti-cop."

Limbaugh on Wednesday called Common an "artiste" and suggested that only uneducated rubes would dare criticize his lyrics. He was also being sarcastic.

Hannity, on his Fox News TV show Tuesday night, went through a litany of Common's alleged offenses. When a guest accused Hannity of advocating censoring poets, he responded: "I don't want to censor them. Should he be in the White House? Big difference."

Sarah Palin also weighed in by tweeting, "OH LOVELY, WHITE HOUSE." Common responded by tweeting, "SO APPARENTLY SARAH PALIN AND FOX NEWS DOESN'T LIKE ME."

Some police unions and support groups have also objected to the invitation.

LOS ANGELES – Lady Gaga turned up the heat on "American Idol."

The eccentric pop superstar pushed the Fox singing competition's top four finalists to add theatrics to their Wednesday performances of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller songs. Her advice that Scotty McCreery should pretend that the microphone is his girlfriend prompted the deep-voiced 17-year-old country crooner to kiss the cross around his neck.

"You've got to get right in the center of that hot dog," she advised the conservative singer.

Lady Gaga's steamy direction didn't seem to deter McCreery, who impressed the judges with both his rollicking take on The Coasters' "Young Blood" and heartfelt rendition of Alan Jackson's "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)" during the beginning of Wednesday's episode when the finalists were tasked with performing inspirational tunes.

"You're ready for superstardom, and I hope you make it," Randy Jackson told McCreery afterward.

Lauren Alaina also seemed poised for greatness with her inspirational ballad of Martina McBride's "Anyway," but she wasn't ready to proclaim that she was "evil," as noted in the lyrics to Elvis Presley's "Trouble," until she received some motivation from Lady Gaga, who directed the 16-year-old singer from Rossville, Ga., to sing the ditty in character.

"When I was 16, I was way too weird to be on `American Idol,'" Lady Gaga admitted.

The result was apparently delicious, with Steven Tyler noting that Alaina "delivers a song like a blue plate special." Haley Reinhart, the 20-year-old vocalist from Wheeling, Ill., wasn't quite as yummy. The judges bickered about her interpretation of Michael Jackson's "Earth Song." Tyler was a fan, but Jackson and Jennifer Lopez didn't eat it up.

"I felt like you were just screaming," Jackson said over a chorus of boos from the crowd.

Reinhart returned with a vengeance — and a string orchestra — with Ben E. King's "I (Who Have Nothing)." Lady Gaga directed her to let out a dramatic exhale in the middle of the song. The judges were floored. Jackson dubbed it "her moment" of the night, and Tyler informed her that she "just Reinharted yourself into the middle of next week."

"That was amazing," said Lopez. "One of the best performances of the year."

James Durbin, the wailing 22-year-old rocker from Santa Cruz, Calif., opened the show clad in tails with Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" and closed it down with a metal-tinged take on The Clovers' "Love Potion No. 9." Jackson, who formerly played bass with Journey, said Durbin was "paying homage to my friends," and Tyler attested that he "did it right."

"You can sing anything," Lopez told Durbin after "Love Potion No. 9."

One of the four finalists will be eliminated Thursday. The 10th season "Idol" scheduled to be selected on the May 26 finale.

White House Defends Invite To Rapper COMMON

The White House is standing by its decision to invite the rapper Common to participate in a poetry event despite conservative and other criticism that the musician has glorified the killing of police officers with his lyrics.

Spokesman Jay Carney says President Barack Obama has spoken out against violent and misogynistic music lyrics. But Carney also said media reports about Common's participation in Tuesday night's East Room event distort what the rapper stands for.

Carney says Common has earned praise for being a socially conscious rapper. He adds that Obama appreciates Common's work trying to get children in their Chicago hometown interested in poetry.

Republican strategist Karl Rove and 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin have expressed displeasure at the White House for inviting Common.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – On a wind-swept balcony at the posh Chateau Marmont hotel, Michael "Mike D" Diamond, one-third of the legendary hip-hop trio the Beastie Boys, is recounting to Adam "Ad-Rock" Horowitz what happened at a party that he departed early the night before. Among the recollections is that the DJ spun "Jolene."

"He killed it," Diamond recalls. "That's a great song though. Dolly Partner is a great songwriter."

"Yeah," Horowitz replies without missing a beat. "Dolly Partner's penned like over 1,000 songs."

When asked if the pair are intentionally flubbing the country icon's name, Horowitz reveals that the mispronunciation is actually an inside joke stretching back to the 1980s when the group would study musician-filmmaker Don Letts' mixtapes of dancehall music from the United Kingdom. On one edition, a deep-voiced DJ incorrectly bellowed the name "Dolly Partner."

"From that point on, she was no longer Dolly Parton but etched forever in our minds as Dolly Partner," Diamond explains.

"And that's no disrespect to Dolly Partner because she's an incredible musician," Horowitz deadpans.

It's been 25 years since the Beastie Boys released "Licensed to Ill" and proved three bratty Jewish guys from New York could deliver hip-hop as deliciously as Run-D.M.C. Despite gray hair for Horowitz, fatherhood for Diamond and cancer for Adam "MCA" Yauch, the group is as goofy as ever, as evidenced by the old-school flavor on their new album, "Hot Sauce Committee Part Two."

Yauch, who discovered he had cancer of the salivary gland in 2009, is notably absent from the balcony jokefest. He's still undergoing treatment. ("It's hard that he's not here, but it'd be harder for him to be here," Diamond says.) Yauch's condition has put the tight-knit group's near future in limbo.

"It is what is," Horowitz says seriously, not long after extinguishing a cigarette. "You deal with it. He's getting treatment. That's the most important thing. We've been friends since 1980. All of this doesn't matter. If we go on tour, we go on tour. If don't go, we don't go. We'll figure it out. Yauch getting better is the most important thing right now."

Diamond says Yauch's illness didn't influence their new music because recording was mostly finished before Yauch was diagnosed. However, the bad news made the group, whose ages now range from 44 to 46, more appreciative of their time together when they returned to the studio to morph the originally planned "Hot Sauce Committee Part One" into "Part Two."

"It made us enjoy sticking with the vibe that we had already established," Diamond says. "It was that much more of a relief for us. Ultimately, we just realized that we wanted to enjoy ourselves while we were making this record. That became a fun thing for us, and hopefully when people interact with this record, they will be enjoying themselves, too."

The Beastie Boys' first lyrical effort in seven years — 2007's "The Mix Up" was an instrumental affair — is a return to the group's signature roots of uncomplicated beats and clever rhymes. For instance, one moment on the carefully crafted track "Long Burn The Fire" finds Ad-Rock hollering, "I'll make you sick like a Kenny Rogers Roaster."

There are also wacky references to Tippi Hedren, Ted Danson and Andre Leon Talley. The album's tone is more akin to 1994's "Ill Communication" and 1998's "Hello Nasty" than the decidedly more serious route the Beastie Boys took with 2004's "To the 5 Boroughs." Each of those albums debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts when they were originally released.

While the Beastie Boys were originally known for thei

Will Ferrell has deviated from his comic persona from time to time, giving more dramatic performances in movies like "Stranger Than Fiction." But no film has asked him to delve into the kinds of deep, dark places required of him in "Everything Must Go." And he more than rises to the challenge.

Ferrell's stripped-down presence is a thing of elegant melancholy — even when his character is at his ugliest and worst. He never seems to judge the man he's playing, Nick Halsey, who thinks he's hit bottom but then finds he can continue falling. Rather, he just becomes this person in small, quiet ways.

And in the hands of first-time writer-director Dan Rush, based on a Raymond Carver short story, "Everything Must Go" is a small, quiet movie. It may feel a bit too languid at times, but the pacing also allows time for us to ruminate alongside Nick, to take it all in — for better and for worse.

When we first meet Nick, he's being fired from his job as a longtime salesman. He peaked professionally a while ago, he clearly has a drinking problem, and there are vague rumblings about a messy incident during a work trip to Denver.

After a quick and impetuous bout of vandalism in the parking lot, he arrives at his suburban Phoenix home to find his wife has left him, changed the locks and alarm codes, and scattered his belongings on the front lawn.

Rather than panic, he scrapes together the little money he has left and heads to the convenience store for some Pabst Blue Ribbon, his drink of choice. (Surely this isn't the kind of high-profile product placement that inspired Morgan Spurlock's recent documentary.)

He then proceeds to rearrange the furniture as if it were still sitting in his living room, plop down in his recliner and get hammered. For several days straight. One thing "Everything Must Go" really gets right is the day-in, day-out of life as a functioning alcoholic: the shakes in the morning, the resourceful means of finding a drink however you must as the day drags on.

Perhaps it's a bit of an obvious metaphor that Nick is awakened bright and early each day by cold, insistent splashes of water from the sprinklers, but hey — that's what happens when you pass out in the front yard. He also has an awakening of sorts in the form of two new and unlikely friendships.

One is with Samantha (a lovely Rebecca Hall), the married, pregnant photographer who's just moved by herself into the generic tract house across the street. Her husband is still working temporarily in New York, but her relationship with Nick doesn't venture in any of the conventional directions you might expect.

The other is with Kenny (Christopher Jordan Wallace, who played his father, the late rapper Notorious B.I.G., as a child in "Notorious"), a bored neighborhood kid who aimlessly rides his bike up and down the street. Kenny becomes Nick's daily companion, and then his business partner, helping sell off the exercise equipment, lamps, samurai swords and other knickknacks that seemed so essential for so long.

Theirs becomes a makeshift yet effortless father-son relationship. But like the bond Nick forges with Samantha, it doesn't go into any obviously mawkish places. These people — as well as Laura Dern in a startlingly poignant turn in one scene as an old high school classmate — help Nick emerge from his fog. And only then do glimmers of the Ferrell we've known and loved all these years come shining through.

"Everything Must Go" ends on a vague note of uplift, but that's actually preferable to being sold a fake version of happily-ever-after.

"Everything Must Go," a Roadside Attractions release, is rated R for languag

Award-winning actor, author and activist Isaiah Washington shares his story of discovery, triumph and finding true purpose with his upcoming bestseller “A Man From Another Land: How Finding My Roots Changed My Life”, with contribution from Lavaille Lavette. The book, published by The Hachette Group, was released on April 27, 2011 and is available online at http://www.amazon.com and most major outlets.

“I wrote this book because I want current and future generations of African Americans to know that our spiritual, cultural and economic freedom is in our DNA”, says Washington. In addition to the DNA connection, this literary movement takes a look at the importance of finding purpose, mentoring, self identity and redemption for all people.

Washington, the first African American to be granted dual citizenship based solely on DNA testing, says “it is my hope people will attribute their life’s experiences to destiny, which defines us all, instead of serendipity and luck, after reading A Man From Another Land.” Following his own destiny, Washington started the Gondobay Manga Foundation after discovering his direct genetic link to the people of Sierra Leone.

About the Author Isaiah Washington is an award winning actor from stage to television to the silver screen; having most recently starred in the successful television series Grey’s Anatomy, and appeared in Soul Food, Touched by an Angel and New York Undercover, in addition to others. His movies credits include, but are not limited to, The Least of These, Exit Wounds, Out of Sight, Love Jones, Jungle Fever, Get on the Bus, Clockers, Crooklyn and Strictly Business.
