18-year-old killed on his birthday during a deadly shooting in Crown Hill

INDIANAPOLIS -- An 18-year-old was killed on his birthday during a deadly shooting over the weekend on Indy's near north side.




Just before 2 a.m. on Saturday, neighbors on Graceland Avenue in Crown Hill awoke to the sounds of gunfire. Witnesses reported hearing dozens of gunshots from what sounded like multiple shooters using different weapons.




That shooting killed Anthony Hernandez-Lopez just a couple of hours after he turned 18 because his birthday was on Saturday. A second victim showed up at the hospital a short time later with non-fatal injuries.




"It's just a sad story," Reverend Charles Harrison said.




The Crown Hill neighborhood has been patrolled by Indy's Ten Point Coalition for years. In fact, Reverend Harrison said his group walked along Graceland just a few hours before the shooting.




"We were there that Friday night and it was pretty quiet, so when I heard about it, I was shocked because we had just been there," Harrison said.




After the shooting, police were able to detain two people for questioning. Both potential suspects were interviewed and released without charges.




IMPD said the investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.




So far, it's not clear exactly what led to the homicide, but Harrison said his community patrols can't go into people's homes and back yards, making it difficult to prevent violence that stems from arguments and other personal disputes.




"Well, it would be helpful if people learned to solve their conflicts in a peaceful way. You know, we're out there and IMPD is out there engaging people who may be involved in criminal activity, but when these arguments occur and people end up being shot and killed, we don't know what to do about that," Harrison said.
