On the average, September is our third sunniest month of the year. After 21 days with more sun than clouds, we've had gray skies and rain for the past two days. Tuesday started with dense fog causing visibility under one mile and skies were cloudy throughout the day. Rain and thunderstorms will spread across the state this evening and the rain will be heavy at times through Wednesday. Up to an inch of rain is likely through Wednesday afternoon.
Scattered showers will linger through Thursday before ending Friday morning. The rainfall is something we really need. Precipitation in Indianapolis has been below average for each of the past five months. Since May 1st, our rainfall deficit is more than four and a half inches below average. 87% of the state is in the first stage of drought and 58% of the state is unfortunately in the second stage.
The rain will keep us cool this week. The average high this time of year is 76° and we'll be below average for the next two days. So far this year we've had 24 wet weekend and 15 completely dry weekends, and after a soggy week, sunny skies will return for Saturday and Sunday with highs near 80°.
