AAA: Indiana could see record number of travelers over Memorial Day weekend

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana could see a record number of travelers on Memorial Day weekend this year.
According to projections from AAA and S&P Global Market Intelligence, more than 970,000 Indiana residents are expected to travel at least 50 miles from May 22-26, including:
- Around 883,000 by vehicle
- Around 52,000 by plane
- Around 35,000 using other modes of travel.
This comes as AAA is projecting that more than 45 million people nationwide will travel at least 50 miles for the holiday weekend. A news release from AAA said this is the highest number of travelers on record for Memorial Day travel, and around 1.4 million travelers more compared to 2024.
"Both nationally and in the Hoosier State, we're expecting to see the highest volume of travelers ever on record for Memorial Day," said Christina Griffiths, the manager of public affairs and communications for AAA Hoosier Motor Club. "This is also the first time we are surpassing 2019 numbers, after which travel decreased because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This increase in holiday travel has continued steadily over the last five years."
Officials said in the release that most individuals are expected to drive this holiday weekend, because of lower crude oil prices. Prices for gasoline this year have not seen typical seasonal spikes.
