André Carson aiming to co-sponsor articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump
INDIANAPOLIS - U.S. Representative André Carson is aiming to co-sponsor articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
In a post on X, Carson - a democrat who represents Indiana's seventh district - wrote about articles of impeachment that were brought against Trump on Tuesday. According to The Associated Press, Representative Al Green, a democrat from Texas, brought the resolution to impeach Trump to the floor of the House of Representatives.
After Green brought the measure forth, the House of Representatives voted to set aside the matter by a tally of 344-79.
Despite the vote, Carson indicated that he carefully reviewed the resolution on Wednesday. He also wrote that Green brought the resolution to Congress before "most members had a chance to review the measure."
"Yesterday, an impeachment resolution was brought to the floor before most members had a chance to review the measure," Carson said. "I've voted twice before to impeach Donald Trump - so I know impeachment articles must present the best possible legal case. Today, I was able to carefully review the resolution - and I have now requested to be one of the first co-sponsors on articles to impeach Donald Trump."
The House of Representatives has previously impeached Trump on two occasions - once in 2019 and again in 2021. Both times Trump was previously impeached, the U.S. Senate acquitted him of the charges he faced.
A report from the Nexstar's The Hill indicates Green has introduced articles to impeach Trump multiple times. Green has also had spats with Trump in the past, including when we was removed from a presidential address to Congress in March.
Green brought his latest resolution to the House after Trump announced that the U.S. had executed airstrikes at three Iranian nuclear facilities.
Per The Associated Press, when he introduced his most recent resolution, Green said Trump may have plunged the U.S. into war without consulting Congress.
"I do this because no one person should have the power to take over 300 million people to war without consulting with the Congress of the United States of America," he said. "I do this because I understand that the Constitution is going to be meaningful or it's going to be meaningless."
Like Green, Carson has also been critical of the airstrikes the U.S. carried out in Iran last week.
"The president can only take war action without Congressional approval if the U.S. is directly under attack from a foreign country, to protect and rescue Americans abroad, safely remove troops, or for peacekeeping missions or humanitarian aid," Carson wrote in a post on X on Saturday. "President Trump's actions are unconstitutional - and it's putting our active duty and reserve troops in danger by getting us into another endless war.
"I'm cosponsoring the War Powers Resolution to block any effort to drag the US into a regional war without public debate or accountability. I'm being briefed on the situation and will continue providing updates to my constituents. That's the type of transparency the American people deserve."
Carson hasn't been the only politician from Indiana to weigh in on the U.S. airstrikes in Iran. Check out reaction from more Hoosier lawmakers here and here.
