INDIANAPOLIS - Honda and Chevrolet may be the most popular car brands in Indiana, but a report reveals that drunk drivers caught by Hoosier police officers are most likely to be behind the wheel of an Audi.
Data compiled by LendingTree found that among the top 30 most popular car brands, Audi drivers have the highest DUI rate in the state at 9.64 DUIs per 1,000.
The second most probable drunk driver in Indiana is likely behind the wheel of a Ram pickup, per the report, at a rate of 6.56 DUIs per 1,000. Cadillac was just behind Ram, with Chrysler and Dodge rounding out the top five.
Despite the Honda CR-V and the Chevy Silverado being named the best-selling vehicles in Indiana, neither Chevy nor Honda cracked the top five for DUI rate per car brand.
Factoring in the top 50 cities in America, LendingTree's data revealed that BMW drivers have the highest rate of DUIs across the nation, with Ram coming in second, Acura in third, and Audi and Volvo tied in fourth. This means four of the top five brands with the highest DUI rate are considered "luxury brands."
"Some may wonder if wealthier drivers sometimes feel more entitled to break, or at least bend, the law," LendingTree postulated in its report.
Indianapolis and DUIs
Among the largest 50 cities in the United States, Indianapolis has the 20th highest DUI rate at 2.11 DUIs per 1,000 drivers.
Omaha, Nebraska, has the highest rate of DUIs in the country, according to the report, at a staggering 4.48 per 1,000 drivers. San Jose and Sacramento, California, were in second and third at 3.68 and 3.55, respectively.
Despite being the third largest city in America, Chicago came in dead last at only .45 DUIs per 1,000 drivers.
LendingTree's data concluded that one-third of fatal accidents in Indianapolis involve a drunk driver. An analysis of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's fatality reporting found that 33.3% of fatal crashes in the Hoosier capital involved a drunk driver.
El Paso, Texas, and Omaha, Nebraska, had the highest percentage of fatal crashes involving drunk drivers at 60.8% and 60.6%, respectively.
What brand has the worst drivers?
Across the U.S., two car brands lead the way in being involved in the most driving incidents.
According to LendingTree's data, Tesla and Ram boast the dubious "honor" of having the worst drivers. Ram drivers are the worst in 16 states, being involved in 33.92 driving incidents per 1,000 drivers.
Tesla drivers edged out Ram drivers to take the crown of "worst drivers" with 36.94 driving incidents per 1,000 drivers. Despite leading the nation in driving incidents, Tesla only led the way in nine states compared to Ram's 16 states.
In Indiana, Tesla is the car brand involved in the most driving incidents at a rate of 50.86 per 1,000 drivers.
Mercury has the best drivers in the U.S., according to the report, with only 18.63 driving incidents per 1,000 drivers. See the full list here and see where your brand of car falls.
What generation has the highest DUI rate?
Would it shock you to know that younger drivers are caught driving drunk more than older ones?
LendingTree's study found that Gen Z drivers (ages 18 to 27 in 2024) were the most likely to be caught driving under the influence with a DUI rate of 2.62 per 1,000 drivers. Millennials (ages 28 to 43 in 2024) weren't far behind at a DUI rate of 2.40 per 1,000 drivers.
Gen X drivers' DUI rate landed at 1.40 per 1,000 while Baby Boomers' DUI rate was .76 per 1,000.
"People tend to become more risk-averse as they age," said Rob Bhatt, LendingTree auto insurance expert and licensed insurance agent.
