INDIANAPOLIS - A sports bar dedicated to only showing women's athletics on its TVs is planning a location in Indianapolis as part of a nationwide expansion.
The Sports Bra, a bar that is "100% dedicated to supporting and showing women's sports," opened its first location in Portland in April 2022. The "tiny 40-seat bar in Northeast Portland" soon grew to what owners say is something much bigger.
Now, three years later, management has announced an expansion to four more U.S. cities: Boston, Las Vegas, St. Louis and Indianapolis.
In a news release, The Sports Bra said these cities were chosen because of their dedication to and passion for women's sports. For Indianapolis, the Indiana Fever of the WNBA was mentioned.
"These aren't just dots (or bras) on a map to us. These are cities with rich sports cultures and serious women's sports legacies," founder Jenny Nguyen said. "We're honored to plant roots in places where fandom runs deep and the demand for women's sports is undeniable."
Nguyen said in her statement that each new location will have the same mission as the original Portland bar. That mission includes supporting women-owned businesses, serving quality food/drinks and creating a welcome space for anyone who wants to belong.
"So yes, we're growing," Nguyen wrote. "But we're also staying true to what made The Sports Bra special in the first place: community, equity, joy, and the celebration of women's sports and women athletes."
