Harry Styles has publicly discussed the death of One Direction bandmate Liam Payne for the first time. In a new interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, the singer admits that he has difficulty dealing with public expectations surrounding his grief. "Even the idea of talking about it, I struggle with that a little bit even," Styles said, while adding "I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of own part of your grief in a way." Payne died October 16, 2024, at age 31 after falling from his hotel balcony. Styles called his former bandmate "a super special person," and said "It's so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways. I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great." The conversation comes ahead of the March 6 release of Styles' fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. Styles says "I think the greatest way you can honor your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest."
