Bloomington police looking for suspect who allegedly stole vehicle with infant inside
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Bloomington police are searching for a suspect who allegedly stole a vehicle with an infant inside late Sunday night.
Officers with the Bloomington Police Department were called around 11:15 p.m. to a Speedway Gas Station located at 3939 W. Thurd Street in response to a reported vehicle theft and possible child abduction.
When officers arrived on the scene, they spoke with a 23-year-old woman who told them she had gone inside the gas station to pick up a money order. She had left her infant son in the backseat of her 2013 Chevrolet Equinox and said she parked near the entrance so she could have a clear view of her vehicle.
While she was inside the gas station, the woman recalled that it was taking the clerk longer than she anticipated to process the money order. Around this same time, the woman saw her vehicle pulling out of the parking lot, BPD said.
The woman reportedly ran out of the gas station while screaming for help. BPD said two individuals allowed the woman to get inside their vehicle and they began to chase the stolen vehicle eastbound on Third Street.
At one point during the chase, BPD said the stolen vehicle had reportedly pulled into the parking lot of a Bob Evans in the area. During the chase, the woman remained on the phone with 911. When the woman approached her stolen vehicle, she observed that it was abandoned. The infant was asleep in the backseat and did not suffer any injuries, BPD said.
BPD said no witnesses saw the suspect flee the stolen vehicle. Investigators will now review any available surveillance footage that any nearby businesses may have collected.
The incident remains under investigation.
