Border Czar: National Guard to assist ICE in 19 states including Indiana
WASHINGTON, D.C.---Starting next month, the Trump Administration plans to deploy 1,700 National Guard troops to assist ICE officials in 19 states.
"ICE is overwhelmed," Homan said. "We got almost 700,000 illegal aliens with a criminal history that we're trying to find, so the National Guard: they're a support function; they're a force multiplier."
Homan said the troops will help ICE with transportation and intel, but will not make arrests. State Rep. Ed Delaney (D-Indianapolis) called the move a "show of force" and a way for the Trump Administration to distract from lower-than-anticipated deportation numbers.
"I think the federal government is literally out of control," DeLaney said. "The governor has the option of saying we won't participate. I hope the guy, he won't participate."
FOX59/CBS4 reached out to Gov. Mike Braun's Office for comment. The office referred us to the Indiana National Guard. The Guard has not released a statement as of the publication of this article.
Earlier this month, Gov. Braun said Indiana would "fully partner" with federal immigration authorities. That includes plans to detain hundreds of undocumented migrants at Camp Atterbury and the Miami Correctional Facility.
"We're corroborating with ICE here on the 'worst first,'" Gov. Braun said during a media event last week.
The mission is expected to last through mid-November.
