Christian Park residents worried about spinners and call on IMPD to put a stop to it

INDIANAPOLIS - Residents in the east side's Christian Park neighborhood said they're fearful of what could happen if spinners aren't stopped.

The sound of screeching tires has unfortunately become the new sound of the summer in the neighborhood. Doorbell cameras have captured at least three instances in the past week of cars using an intersection along Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive to spin.

The cars kick up plumes of smoke, speed off and leave behind frustrated neighbors.

"It is just very upsetting to see that the people that have worked so hard to make the park such a great place and people just don't have any appreciation for anyone else's comfort or safety," resident Terri Davis said.

Safety is a big worry for Davis who lives right by the intersection that still remains covered in the spinners' tire tracks. She said the cars often speed off going towards the park which is often filled with kids and families.

Luckily, nothing bad has happened...yet.

"They disturb the peace," Davis said during an interview on her front porch. "I can't sit out here and watch them without worrying that someone is going to get hurt in our neighborhood."

Even more frustrating for Davis is that her efforts to try and put a stop to it have gone nowhere.

Calls to the cops, the mayor's office and her city-county councilor have changed nothing. We heard the same story from other neighbors who said the police take too long to respond.

"We are really all fed up and I think people stop calling because they run into brick walls," Davis explained. "They don't know what happens once they've called. They don't know what steps people are taking."

Street takeovers and spinning have been big issues in recent years for a severely understaffed IMPD. The department said in statement it will continue to crack down on those activities this summer and encouraged neighbors to call 911 if they see it happening.

Davis would like to see the spinners just stop - but with the fat chance of that happening - she'd like to see police double down before someone gets hurt.

"The park on the weekends is full of people. And I mean full. You can hear the laughter, the sounds of the city, the dogs barking, the kids playing the music," Davis described. "Everyone is having a wonderful time...and they deserve to be safe in that space."

Here's IMPD's full statement:

IMPD will continue to respond to incidents involving reckless driving and evaluate each situation on a case-by-case basis. We are grateful to have the Indiana State Police and other local agencies assisting us in addressing dangerous spinning activity on our roadways.

That said, we need the public's help. If you witness spinning or other reckless behavior in progress, please call 911 immediately. These events are not only illegal, but they are also extremely dangerous for participants, spectators, and other drivers, and they show a lack of respect for those who rely on our roads for safe travel.

Earlier this month, IMPD joined forces with ISP and other local law enforcement partners to crack down on this illegal behavior. We will continue enforcement efforts throughout the summer to hold violators accountable and keep our streets safe.
