Coroner IDs 2 men killed in pair of Sunday night homicides

INDIANAPOLIS - The names of two men killed in a pair of homicides Sunday night have been confirmed by the coroner's office.




The violence started just a few minutes before 7 p.m. Sunday when a man named Jesus Estrada was found in an alley near State Avenue and Washington Street suffering from stab wounds. The 39-year-old later died in the hospital.




Neighbors called 911 and reported hearing the victim involved in an argument, but police said on the scene that it's not clear exactly who committed the stabbing.




"We don't know any suspect information at all," said IMPD Captain Don Weilhammer. "We just know there was an argument between the victim and an individual."




So far, that homicide remains unsolved.




While police were still investigating that killing, close to 90 minutes later, around 8:30 p.m., police were called to another scene about 4 miles east, where a man was found shot outside a home on Oak Avenue near Washington and Arlington.




32-year-old Teddy Chapple also died after being rushed to the hospital. Police say witnesses told them the killing began with a disturbance between family members.




"Whether it's a knife or gun, violence is not the way to solve conflicts between each other," said Weilhammer.




Weilhammer, who responded to both scenes, said the deaths shared a common message that is often ignored.




"Violence isn't the way," he said. "Try to talk it out. If you can't talk it out, maybe get somebody to help you. Bottom line is turn and walk away."




The person suspected of shooting Chapple was detained and questioned, but later released pending further review by the prosecutor's office.
