Court docs explain what led to weekend shooting that left 2 men dead and 2 in jail for murder

INDIANAPOLIS -- A violent weekend left seven people dead across Indianapolis.

Over the span of less than 48 hours, from Saturday morning to Monday morning, police say five different shootings led to seven homicides.

The first of those crimes took place Saturday morning in the parking lot of the Carriage House Apartment complex near 42nd and Mitthoefer. That's where 31-year-old Kenneth Lyles was ambushed, shot and killed by two men.

At the same time, Lyles' girlfriend was shot and wounded while sitting in his SUV.

According to court records, the shooting was all caught on camera.

Police believe one of the victims returned fire, hitting 27-year-old Johnny Talley Jr. in the chest.

The documents state that Talley, who was reportedly wearing gloves and a face mask, ran from the scene before he collapsed and later died at a hospital.

Police claim a third suspect, Marquis Craig, then fired more shots at the victims before he drove away in a truck and picked up one of the two initial shooters, identified as Zay McDaniels.

From there, the pair is accused of leading police on a high-speed chase that ended when police forced the suspect's truck to spin out and crash on West 16th Street.

McDaniels reportedly tried to flee on foot shortly before the chase ended, but he was taken into custody.

Craig initially refused to get out of his truck and said he wanted to finish smoking a blunt before he too surrendered.

That violence marked the first of seven homicides over the weekend.

"This was a really hard weekend for the city. It affected a lot of people," IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson said.

IMPD admits the series of weekend shootings are troubling, but insists the community needs to do their part to prevent violence.

"We need to better as a society. That's every one of us. We have to know when to walk away," said Thompson.

"Law enforcement cannot do it by themselves," said Rev. James Jackson with Fervent Prayer Church. "I think we've seen collaboration between police and community in recent months and hopefully that will continue."

Jackson's church is less than a mile away from 42nd and Mitthoefer, where one of the homicides occurred.

Jackson said the weekend violence is disappointing, but points out that homicide numbers have gone down significantly so far this year citywide.

"Hopefully, this weekend is an anomaly," said Jackson.

According to court records, neither Craig or McDaniels was willing to talk to detectives after being arrested, but police believe the double homicide stemmed from an attempted robbery.

Craig and McDaniels are currently being held without bond on murder charges.

At the same time anyone with information about the other five weekend homicides is still asked to contact either IMPD's Homicide Office or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
