Court docs: Indy man kidnapped girlfriend at gunpoint after shooting his grandfather in Elkhart

INDIANAPOLIS - An Indianapolis man's reign of terror has earned him a 14-year stint in prison.

Dhantori Honorable pleaded guilty in July to two counts of kidnapping, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, criminal recklessness, domestic battery, battery on a person under 14, auto theft and resisting law enforcement.

A judge handed down his 16-year sentence on Wednesday, ordering 14 years of the sentence be executed in the Indiana Department of Correction.

Honorable's slew of felony charges stems from a violent and terrifying chain of crimes that began in Elkhart on Jan. 16, 2024. According to court documents, Honorable shot his grandfather twice with a .45 handgun after a verbal altercation turned physical. This occurred shortly before 7 p.m.

The grandfather survived the shooting.

Honorable is then accused of forcing his then-girlfriend to drive him at gunpoint from Elkhart to Indianapolis while her children were also in the vehicle. He reportedly threw her cell phone out the window during the trip.

According to court documents, Honorable had her drive to an apartment complex on the west side. Unknown to her, Honorable's former girlfriend lived at the complex.

The former girlfriend later told police she'd been tipped off that Honorable was heading her way, so she sent her children to someone else's home. Honorable showed up at her apartment at 10:45 p.m. and banged on the front door before firing several shots into the apartment.

The woman, fortunately, wasn't hit.

Honorable then had his girlfriend drive him to a liquor store and told her to "f*** the cashier" to get him some liquor. As she walked into the liquor store, she claimed Honorable pointed his gun at her children.

After purchasing him a bottle of vodka, he ordered her to drive to a food mart gas station on Beachway Drive. The woman tried to escape with her children at one point, but Honorable allegedly fired a bullet past her head and out the windshield.

Honorable forced the woman to drive away and leave her child at the gas station. The woman told police she pleaded with him to let her go back and pick up her child. Honorable instead made her pull into a bank parking lot, where he is accused of punching her in the face.

But when he exited the vehicle, the woman sped away and headed back to the gas station where she'd been forced to leave her child. Honorable allegedly stole a vehicle and pulled up at the same gas station in pursuit.

But police were already on scene, having been called to the gas station due to the child being left at the gas pumps.

Indianapolis police officers took Honorable into custody. According to court documents, he allegedly bragged about shooting his grandfather earlier in the day.

All in all, Honorable's reign of terror spanned from Elkart to Indianapolis, all within less than five hours. This incident also occurred just four days after he appeared in court on an unrelated case for resisting law enforcement and intimidation.

"We are pleased that the Court ordered the maximum possible sentence," said Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears. "This resolution secures a lengthy prison sentence for the defendant while sparing two young children from revisiting this significant trauma at a trial."

A booking photo of Dhantori Honorable was not available at the time of publishing.
