Dangerous heat holds on as storm chances rise in central Indiana

Heat index PEAKING this afternoon at 105° in Indianapolis. This is the 5th day this summer with a heat index of 100° or higher and the HIGHEST so far. PEAK HEAT INDEX thus far Thursday: 114° Fortville, 114° Mt Comfort Airport.

HEAT ADVISORY extended through Friday evening. HEAT INDEX over 100° likely Friday but remnants of overnight storms and new afternoon scattered t-storms may bring some local relief.

Spotty storms early Thursday afternoon brought brief, temporary relief and are fading fast just before 6pm. More organized storms north, late day, may leak south into northcentral Indiana before sunrise Friday.

Early day and again afternoon./evening downpours and storms will be in the forecast through the weekend and in between, more hot and humid conditions. There will be many rain-free and dry hours, and the rain will not be evenly distributed. The pattern may afford some heavier storm clusters or complexes, especially late night or pre-dawn - something we will monitor closely. Otherwise, no real relief is coming until later next week. A large change to milder air is possible entering the month of August.
