Disturbance unfolds during Lafayette protest

LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A disturbance took place during Lafayette's 50501 Movement protest, Lafayette Police Department announced on Saturday.

According to LPD, an adult male was driving his vehicle and "attempted to make a lawful turn at the intersection of 3rd Street and Columbia Street when his path was obstructed by protestors standing in the roadway."

This led to the driver and protestors getting into a verbal altercation, followed by a male protestor headbutting the driver.

Then, the driver retrieved a firearm from his vehicle, describing doing so "as an act of self-defense." LPD said that they conducted a thorough investigation and found that the man did not discharge nor point the firearm at anyone and quickly returned it to his truck. As a result, he was determined not to have committed a crime and was released.

LPD is still actively searching for the protestor who headbutted the driver. Those with information are encouraged to call LPD at (765) 807-1200.

This is a developing story. FOX59/CBS4 will update this article once more information is made available.
