Docs: Anderson woman sexually exploited infant, filmed it for her boyfriend
ANDERSON, Ind. - An Anderson woman has been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to sexually exploiting an infant family member during supervised DCS visits. Her boyfriend, who asked her to film it for him, has also been charged and sentenced.
Jamie M. Powell, 44, was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release and a $10,000 restitution payment. Powell, who also goes by Jamie Cramer, recently pleaded guilty to various sexual exploitation of a minor charges.
Richard Smith, 42, was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison in connection with the case, also followed by a lifetime of supervised release and a $10,000 restitution payment. Smith previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit child sexual exploitation, among other charges.
Court documents detail how, between late 2020 and early 2021, Powell had access to an infant child during visits supervised by the Department of Child Services. During this same time, Powell began texting her boyfriend Richard Smith about his sexual interest in the child.
"In those texts, the couple agreed for Powell to molest the child and produce sexually explicit photos and videos to send to Smith," documents read. "The messages also contained extremely graphic and crude requests from Smith detailing how he wanted Powell to abuse the minor."
During the DCS-supervised visits, Powell would reportedly wait until officials were not looking to record these videos of the child. Attempting to evade suspicion, Powell would allegedly mask her actions by pretending to change the child's diaper.
"Caretakers who violate the sanctity of trust by exploiting their own children, before they are even old enough to walk or speak, are cruel and vile monsters," said John E. Childress, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana.
In total, over 25 visits, Powell took over 570 photos and videos of the child in sexually explicit positions. Of those, 486 were sent to Smith.
While investigating further, police reportedly found over 2,400 images of child sex abuse material and 170 videos of bestiality on Powell's phone. Investigators found over 5,000 CSAM files on Smith's phone as well.
Smith and Powell were eventually arrested by federal authorities and have since pleaded guilty to the following:
- Jamie M. Powell a.k.a. Jamie Cramer
- Conspiracy to commit the sexual exploitation of a minor,
- Actual sexual exploitation of a minor
- Attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.
- Richard Smith
- Conspiracy to commit the sexual exploitation of a minor,
- Possession of child sexual abuse material.
In addition to Smith's charges in this case, his sentence was ordered to be served consecutively with his state convictions of dealing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine and battery of a police officer. For those crimes, he is serving a combined 25 years.
"The pursuit of those who choose to victimize children is some of the most important work our office does," Childress said. "Jamie Powell and Richard Smith will now spend decades in federal prison where they cannot exploit another child thanks to the dedication and talents of our State Police, federal law enforcement partners, and AUSA."
Childress also thanked Assistant United States Attorney Tiffany J. Preston, who prosecuted the case.
FOX59/CBS4 has been unable to obtain mugshots for Smith and Powell, given that they were convicted on federal charges.
