COATESVILLE, Ind. -- A Coatesville man was taken into custody on Tuesday after a reported hostage situation involving a woman and a 5-year-old.
According to court documents, Eric Auen has officially been charged in Hendricks County with:
- One count of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon, a Level 3 felony
- One count of intimidation, a Level 5 felony
- One count of battery resulting in a bodily injury, a Level 5 felony
- One count of unlawful carrying of a handgun, a Level 5 felony
- One count of strangulation, a Level 6 felony
- One count of pointing a firearm at another, a Level 6 felony
- Two counts of domestic battery, each a Level 6 felony
On Monday, deputies with the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a Coatesville home on a call of a possible hostage situation. The caller told deputies that she had been texted by a friend, who claimed she was being held hostage in a nearby home.
The documents claimed that the man holding the woman hostage was reportedly "intoxicated, violent and was armed with a firearm."
When law enforcement arrived at the home where the alleged hostage situation was occurring, they attempted to make contact with the man, later identified as Auen. The documents stated that Auen allegedly fled from the home, and a K-9 unit was deployed to search for him.
In an interview with the woman, the documents said she had "visible injuries" including lacerations to her legs and arms, as well as swelling and bruising around the neck and face.
The woman claimed that Auen strangled her, pointed a gun at her and threatened to kill her in the incident, which stemmed from an argument. The documents said that the woman attempted to call law enforcement and Auen allegedly kept her from calling by knocking the phone out of her hand. The woman was able to escape from the back of the home and contact police from a neighbor's house.
A 5-year-old was also reportedly in the home during the incident. The child told police they were thrown by the man during the incident, according to documents. Both the woman and child were taken to a local hospital.
During a search of the home at the time, the documents said that Auen was not located, but the firearm allegedly used during the incident was found.
An arrest warrant was issued for Auen on Tuesday with no bond, according to court documents. Officials with the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office said that Auen was later located and taken into custody without incident.
