Docs: Indiana inmate stabbed officer at Pendleton prison

PENDLETON, Ind. - An inmate at the Pendleton Correctional Facility in Madison County has been charged with attempted murder after an officer was reportedly stabbed inside the prison.

D'Drea D. Bostic, 27, was charged this week with felony attempted murder and possession of a dangerous device. Court documents allege that Bostic, an inmate currently serving over 100 years in prison for a robbery and murder in South Bend, stabbed an officer several times.

Documents detail how backup was called around 11 a.m. on July 12, 2024, to Pendleton's H Cell House for an emergency. Crews arrived to find a corrections officer restraining Bostic on the ground with a stun gun pointed at him.

The officer reportedly was bleeding from his head and neck area, the apparent result of multiple stab wounds. He was later taken to an Indianapolis-area hospital for treatment.

Security footage from inside the prison showed Bostic approach the officer from behind and make "several stabbing motions" while holding a weapon toward the officer's upper body. A sharpened piece of metal was later found on the ground.

Court documents describe how Bostic could be seen on video grabbing the weapon off the ground before the stabbing. The inmate who dropped the knife for Bostic to pick up could later be heard saying "The police just caught a straight neck from my boy."

"He's sad to see him go but it had to be done," the inmate said.

While being detained after the incident, Bostic reportedly yelled at officers.

"I just snapped man," the inmate is quoted as saying. "He was calling me all kinds of names and being disrespectful. I just couldn't take it anymore!"

In an interview with investigators, Bostic claimed that the officer "disrespected him" by not letting him out of his cell for his 8 a.m. mental health break. He also alleged that the officer had called him a b***h, which caused him to attack.

Investigators later spoke with the officer, who said that Bostic had approached him asking for a health care request form. The officer said that once he turned around to grab said form, he felt a sharp pain in his head and neck that occurred at least six times.

A doctor who treated the officer reportedly said that if the stab had been a few inches over, the officer's spine would have been hit. The officer had to receive six stitches and told investigators he feared for his life during the incident.

Bostic was already being held on a 105-year sentence for a murder/robbery case out of St. Joseph County. If convicted of attempted murder, he could face an additional 40 years in prison.
