INDIANAPOLIS -- Police have arrested a woman accused of murdering her ex-boyfriend on the east side of Indianapolis last month.
According to court documents, 23-year-old Dasia Jackson has been preliminarily charged with the murder of Ronnie Ameen. He was 24 years old.
Initial investigation
The investigation into Ameen's murder began on Sept. 4 when officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the 9600 block of E. 37th Place. The initial run was listed as an accident, with the driver still inside the vehicle.
The type of run was later changed after medics soon realized the driver, who was identified as Ameen, had been shot before crashing a gray 2014 Toyota into a central air unit and a tree in the area. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Eskenazi Hospital.
As the investigation developed, officers met and spoke with residents in the area. One of the witnesses told police that she did not hear the collision take place. When she looked outside her window, she recalled seeing a vehicle in her backyard. She reported seeing a woman exit the passenger side door of the vehicle while "holding something in her hand."

The witness said the woman then went toward the north side of the yard near a shed before she exited the yard.
Detectives seized an empty gun holster, house shoes and a wallet while investigating the scene of the crash.
The following day, an autopsy revealed that Ameen had suffered a bullet wound to the right side of his chest that struck his right lung before severing his spinal cord. His death was ruled a homicide.
Ameen's relatives provided officers with a video showing Ameen with Jackson, who they confirmed was his ex-girlfriend. One relative said they recently started seeing each other again and that Jackson had reportedly attempted to obtain a protective order against Ameen, court documents said.
Officers confirmed that Jackson did attempt to obtain a protective order on Jan. 25. The request was later denied. A subsequent search warrant for the vehicle led to the discovery of a 10mm black handgun with a full magazine and an unfired bullet in the chamber.
According to court documents, police later learned Ameen did not appear to be armed when he was killed.
Documents shed light on history of violence
Court records detail a violent history between the pair. Documents reveal that officers were called to investigate vandalism, harassment and domestic disturbance reportedly involving Ameen and Jackson.
In a different police report, Ameen allegedly broke the rear window of a vehicle belonging to Jackson's mother.
Jackson's account
On Sept. 17, Jackson met with officers for an interview to learn more about her side of the story. Jackson claimed that Ameen had sent her multiple threatening text messages in the past. She said he recently began sending texts threatening to kill her.
On Sept. 4, Jackson said Ameen told her he was coming to her residence on Keefe Court. When he arrived, she said she got into his vehicle before a physical confrontation broke out. She stated that Ameen allegedly pushed her head against the passenger side window by her neck.
She told police that it was at that moment that she pulled out a firearm from her sweatshirt pocket and shot Ameen, court documents said. After the shooting, she said he drove his vehicle through the intersection, struck a tree and came to a stop in a yard. She said she then exited the vehicle and fled the area.
When she was questioned on why she got inside Ameen's vehicle, she said she was afraid he would break her windows and she "would end up homeless," court documents said. She also confirmed that Ameen did not have a firearm in his possession.
Next steps
Online court records from Marion Superior Court 21 show that Jackson is scheduled to appear on Wednesday for an initial hearing. A warrant for her arrest was served on Monday.
