Docs: Man accused of shooting Elwood police officer stabbed prison guard multiple times

MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. - Court records have revealed new details on an inmate's alleged attempt to kill a guard at IDOC's Miami Correctional Facility earlier this year.

According to court records filed late last week, Carl Boards II stabbed a prison guard with a hand-fashioned knife multiple times. Investigators indicated that Boards tried stabbing the guard just before 5 a.m. on April 25.

In an affidavit for probable cause, investigators wrote that the correctional officer Boards stabbed was monitoring inmates' return to their cells from breakfast. At that time, Boards approached the guard wearing gray sweatpants and no shirt.

Court documents report that Boards had his hands in his pants as he approached the guard. As he got closer, Boards crouched down and began swaying backing and forth.

In response to Boards' actions, the prison guard took a step back. After the guard moved back, Boards lunged at him and attempted to strike him with a weapon.

After a short scuffle, which involved the guard kicking Boards, both individuals ended up on the floor. As both got to their feet, the guard ran toward a grassy area and Boards chased him.

Court records indicate the prison guard fell as he was fleeing from Boards, which allowed Boards to close the gap between them and strike the guard multiple times.

Investigators reported that Boards later turned his attention to a guard who arrived to assist the correctional officer Boards allegedly injured. At that time, Boards then began to chase the assisting officer.

While Boards was attempting to chase the other guard, the officer he had first injured was attempting to get away. As the guard attempted to get away, Boards zeroed back in on him and struck him three more times.

Eventually, additional staff arrived and used mechanical restraints to stop Boards.

The injured correctional officer sustained five injuries in total, according to court records:

  • A puncture wound to his left shoulder

  • A puncture wound to his right shoulder

  • A laceration to his left jaw

  • Two lacerations on his right thigh

The guard was transported to Fort Wayne Lutheran Hospital via medical helicopter after the alleged attack.

During their investigation, police examined the weapon Boards used. Investigators described the weapon as a 10-inch piece of metal with a sharpened point. The weapon even had a handle made of cloth and clear tape.

Upon a search of Boards' cell, which he lived in alone, police found a substance that was later confirmed to be methamphetamine and a clear liquid that smelled like alcohol.

Police also reviewed bodycam footage that captured the alleged attack. According to court documents, Boards could be heard saying he was "built for this" during the incident.

Investigators later conducted an interview with the correctional officer Boards allegedly attacked. The guard said Boards "did not seem like himself" when he emerged from his cell the day of the attack.

The officer also added that he wasn't sure why Boards attacked him, but he believed that Boards was trying to kill him. The guard also indicated that he used chemical agents and a taser during the struggle with Boards, but the tools did not deter Boards.

Boards already had a violent reputation before the alleged attack.. Previous reporting indicates Boards shot Elwood police officer Noah Shahnavaz 36 times during a July 2022 traffic stop. Shahnavaz died from the injuries he sustained during the incident.

Boards' legal representation had previously made insanity pleas for him in court. That plea was later withdrawn. Boards is set to go on trial for his alleged killing on Shahnavaz in January.

An initial hearing in Boards' case involving the prison guard is set for Oct. 7. Boards was charged with attempted murder, possession of a deadly weapon by a prisoner and possession of methamphetamine after the stabbing incident.

Boards faces 11 charges, including murder, in his case involving Shahnavaz.
