Docs: Man arrested after fatal shooting of UPS worker in NW Indy

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man has been arrested on murder charges in relation to the fatal shooting of a UPS worker on the northwest side of Indianapolis last month.

According to officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, 28-year-old Parris Maul was taken into custody in the 3800 block of Cooper Square Court on Monday. This comes after an arrest warrant was issued for Maul on Sept. 19.

On the evening of Aug. 19, IMPD received a call of a reported shooting in the 5400 block of W 81st Street. When officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as 22-year-old La'Renzo Murray, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound in the parking lot of a UPS distribution facility.

Murray, who was a UPS employee, was taken to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead, according to court documents recently filed in Marion County.

A witness reportedly told law enforcement that they saw a man wearing a facemask and a hoodie who was at the center that evening. The man, later identified as Maul, reportedly ran toward Murray, pulled a handgun and shot Murray in the chest.

Maul then reportedly ran from the scene. The documents state that Maul was seen on camera running along the fence line of a nearby building.

As part of the investigation, IMPD used security video from UPS that showed Maul reportedly exiting an IndyGo bus and walking to the center, where he was sitting on benches near the facility, "watching to see who was coming out" of the facility.

IMPD then reportedly obtained video from IndyGo, showing Maul take the bus to the center that evening. After requesting videos of when the same KeyCard was used for bus transactions, IMPD then identified Maul as the suspect. A mapping report also showed Maul's phone in the area of the distribution center at the time of the shooting.

A fellow UPS employee told law enforcement during an interview that Murray had said Maul was reportedly "being weird, but he didn't go into depth about what happened and didn't seem to be worried about it."

The documents said that Murray also told another UPS employee that Maul was acting like a "scary a-- n-----" but did not elaborate on what that meant. An anonymous tip was ultimately made, encouraging IMPD to look into Maul as the suspect in the shooting.

According to court documents, Maul's initial hearing is scheduled for Wednesday morning in Marion County court.
