HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. -- Court documents reveal that a retired Indianapolis metro police officer flashed his badge after being pulled over for suspected drunk driving in Hancock County.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed on Sept. 1, 67-year-old Gary King has been preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a level 5 felony. But this isn't the first time King has been charged with driving while drunk.
This alleged incident occurred on Aug. 31 when an officer with the McCordsville Police Department was patrolling near the intersection of West 750 North and Hanna Street. While sitting near the intersection, the officer observed a black Ford Expedition traveling westbound at a high rate of speed.
The officer determined the driver, later identified as King, was driving 45 mph in a 30 mph zone. The officer proceeded to activate his emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop.
King stopped his vehicle as the officer approached his driver's side window. According to court documents, the officer reported smelling "the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the passenger compartment of the vehicle."
Court documents show that King allegedly displayed his Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department badge before providing his driver's license and vehicle registration. The officer then asked King how much alcohol he had consumed that day.
King replied by sharing that he reportedly drank a few beers earlier that day but stated that he "felt fine to drive and that he was only a couple of miles from his house," court documents said
The officer told King he could smell an alcoholic odor from inside the vehicle and asked him to step outside. As their conversation continued, the officer noted that he could smell an alcohol odor emitting from King's breath.
The officer then had King perform a standardized field sobriety test. King later agreed to take a portable breath test (PBT). The test revealed his BrAC was .111. King was then transported to the Hancock Regional Hospital for a blood draw.
Shortly after that, King was placed under arrest and transported to the Hancock County Jail, where he remains in custody.
IMPD confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 on Thursday that King retired from the department in 2010. The department added that officers who retire from IMPD are provided with a retirement badge.
Online court records show that this is not the first time King has faced OWI charges. In 2013, he pleaded guilty in Marion Superior Court 26 to operating a vehicle while intoxicated. King is scheduled to appear in Hancock Circuit Court on Jan. 20, 2026, for a jury trial for his most recent OWI charge.
