Docs: Teen charged with murder after Beech Grove marijuana transaction leads to shooting
BEECH GROVE, Ind. -- A 16-year-old has been charged with murder in adult court after a shooting in Beech Grove left an 18-year-old woman dead during an alleged marijuana transaction last September.
According to court documents filed on Monday in Marion County, Emanuel Carter has been charged with:
- Two counts of murder
- One count of attempt to commit robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 2 felony
- Misdemeanor count of dangerous possession of a firearm
On Sept. 29, 2024, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the 5900 block of Riva Ridge Drive on a call of a person shot. When officers arrived, they located 18-year-old Makayla Bauman with a gunshot wound.
Bauman was taken to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead, according to previous reports. On the evening of Sept. 29, 2024, officials with the Beech Grove Police Department learned the shooting occurred at the Park View at Beech Grove Apartments. A teen, later identified as Carter, was arrested in relation to the shooting the next day.
According to court documents, an individual who was in the car during the shooting reportedly told officers that he was with Bauman in a vehicle to sell marijuana to "man man," a person later identified as Carter, at the complex. The transaction was arranged through Snapchat.
During the transaction, the person inside the vehicle said that Carter and another man reportedly pointed guns at the two inside the vehicle, stating, "give me everything, do you want to die?" This caused the witness to put the vehicle in reverse in an attempt to flee.
As the vehicle drove away from the scene, the documents state that Carter and the other individual began shooting at the car, hitting Bauman in the process. The documents said that the vehicle reportedly had a single bullet hole in the passenger side front door, which is where Bauman was sitting.
During the investigation into the shooting, officers reportedly located both 9mm and 10mm shell casings in the area where the shooting occurred, indicating that two guns had reportedly been fired.
In an interview, the person who was inside the vehicle identified Carter as the person who reportedly shot Bauman, stating that they were classmates at Beech Grove High School. The witness also identified Carter as the person who "robbed and shot at his vehicle" in an additional interview weeks later. The witness told officers that he did not get a good look at the other man involved in the shooting.
During the investigation into the shooting, officers were led to a home in the 3200 block of E. 34th Street in Indianapolis. Three people, including Carter, were detained.
In an interview with Carter, he reportedly told officers he and a family member were staying with a friend at the Park View at Beech Grove Apartments and had participated in a marijuana transaction.
Carter reportedly told officers that the people in the vehicle produced a gun, which led to the person Carter was with to "(pull) out two guns, one from each pocket, and (begin) shooting with a gun in each hand."
The documents said Carter denied having a gun or shooting at the vehicle, stating that he "took off running" once the vehicle was fleeing the scene. After the interview, Carter was placed under arrest on preliminary charges of murder.
In an additional interview with a separate witness, they said that Carter contacted him, stating that they planned to "rob a 'white boy' of some marijuana" at an abandoned apartment on Fetterbush Lane in the Park View at Beech Grove Apartment complex.
The documents said the witness told police he saw black handguns when Carter and the other individual were inside the apartment. During the transaction, the witness told police that he "attempted to see what was going on outside, but could not see the car due to its location."
"(The witness) then stated he heard gunshots, so he ducked down, and then after a few minutes, he ran back to his apartment and did not see any of the other individuals," the documents said.
According to court documents, Carter's initial hearing is scheduled in Marion County on Wednesday afternoon.
