UNION CITY, Ind. -- A Union City father has been charged with neglect after he took his 2-month-old to the hospital after the infant was not found not breathing.
According to court documents, Brandon Gibson was charged in Randolph County with one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in catastrophic injury, a Level 1 felony.
On May 7, the 2-month-old was transported to a children's hospital in Dayton, Ohio, after the infant was found "red-faced faced making grunting sounds" in her car seat. In fear that the infant was choking, the child's father, identified as Gibson, called 911. The infant was taken by ambulance to a helicopter, which transported the infant to the hospital.
The court documents stated that there were "no readily observable signs of physical abuse." However, an MRI and CT scan reportedly revealed that the child was suffering from a brain bleed and had a fractured femur.
In a conversation with doctors at the hospital, Gibson reportedly said that on May 2, he was bathing the infant when she slipped out of his hands and hit her head on the tub. While the infant reportedly exhibited "abnormal behavior" over the next few days, Gibson reportedly said that the infant began to act more like her normal self on May 6.
On May 7, the 2-month-old was placed in her car seat by Gibson. Gibson went to get other children ready for day care and when he returned, the infant "was red, was grunting and then... became limp." This caused Gibson to call 911.
A doctor told police that the injuries to the infant were internal and not readily observable. The court documents said that the doctor told law enforcement that there was "no explanation" that the parents gave that would explain how the infant received her injuries. The doctor told police that the injuries are consistent with non-accidental trauma.
"(The doctor) also reported to the officers that in her opinion, the injuries that (the infant) received could have occurred over a period of time, as opposed to a single event," the documents said.
In an interview with law enforcement, Gibson reportedly told officers he was "in a hurry" while giving the infant a bath. In further investigation, law enforcement questioned whether he was upset and in a rush to get ready. This caused Gibson to state that he reportedly put the infant "down fast" onto a changing table and how he thought that the infant had hit her head on the table.
"(Gibson) stated several times that (he) did not attempt to hurt her, nor would he ever," the document said. "(Gibson) did admit several times throughout the interview that he did put (the infant) down forcefully and harder (than) he usually would."
In an interview with another family member, she told police that she was unaware that the infant had struck her head and "did not know why (Gibson) did not tell her about it." The family member also said that she was unaware of the leg fracture and what may have caused it.
The documents stated that the infant's long-term prognosis was "unclear" and has a long road to recovery.
Gibson's initial hearing occurred in Randolph County on Thursday morning, according to court documents.
