INDIANAPOLIS - A Danville woman has been preliminarily charged with allegedly supplying fentanyl and xylazine that led to the overdose death of a man in Marion County.
According to court documents, Carolyn Laucher has been charged with dealing in a controlled substance resulting in death, a Level 1 felony. As of the date of publication, she has an active warrant for her arrest.
Court docs indicate that 25-year-old Tanner Ballard died from an apparent drug overdose on April 12, around 4:01 a.m. The autopsy report determined the official cause of death as acute intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl and xylazine.
Ballard's girlfriend told police she last saw him around 1 a.m. playing video games on his computer.
She told police she woke up around 3 a.m. and found Ballard with his head down at his desk, unresponsive. She attempted to resuscitate him with Narcan twice before calling 911.
When officers arrived, they found Ballard's phone at his desk with a small line of white powdery substance.
The text conversation
According to court docs, police located text messages on Ballard's phone between him and a contact named "Karl (Pokemon Cards)." Police later traced the phone number to Laucher. The text conversation stretched from April 11, around 2:14 p.m., to April 12 at 12:34 a.m.
One text from Laucher, timestamped at 11:44 a.m., says, "Just lmk where and I'll leave the stuff in same spot. I talked to him ab her saying she would make him not sell to me anymore and he said he wouldn't do that but he would talk to her and said not to."
A later text from Ballard at 12:31 a.m. responded with "okay i'm gonna take my trash out and just do hand off when walk by."
Interview with Laucher
On May 9, after police received a warrant to seize the phone traced back to Laucher, they interviewed her.
She told police that she was aware that Ballard had overdosed. She said the last time she saw him was early in April.
Court docs state that Laucher drove to Ballard's apartment because he wanted to get some "stuff." She said she was supposed to get him heroin.
Laucher told police that she purchased the drugs from her source and headed to Ballard's apartment.
Charges
Police believe the ingestion of the substance Laucher sold to Ballard led to his death shortly afterward.
Laucher currently has a warrant for her arrest for a charge of Dealing in a Controlled Substance Resulting in Death, a Level 1 felony.
Online court records do not indicate Laucher's scheduled appearance in court at the time of publication.
