Dramatic surveillance video shows shooting that wounded 3 people in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS -- Dramatic surveillance video was released Tuesday of a shooting that wounded three people over the weekend on Indy's northwest side.
That shooting led to attempted murder charges being filed against one of the alleged shooters.
With more than a dozen people walking around, two unprovoked gunmen unleashed a wall of lead, with nearly 50 gunshots in less than four seconds.
IMPD officers monitoring the large crowd Saturday night heard the gunfire and quickly found three victims wounded.
"Certainly the allegations in this case are very disturbing, because we have three counts of attempted murder, but it could have been many more," said Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears.
With the victims on the ground defenseless, the video shows the shooter using a second gun to continue firing.
That's why prosecutors charged 21-year-old Carlos Contreras with nine felonies, including attempted murder and aggravated battery.
Contreras was arrested after speeding away from the scene near 56th and Georgetown. Police chased the suspect two miles down Guion Road until he missed a turn and got stuck on some train tracks.
Prosecutors believe the suspect used a Drako assault rifle and a handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device to spray many rounds in a short period of time.
"We had 40-something shell casings collected at that scene," said Mears. "It highlights all the challenges we see day in and day out in our community."
According to the affidavit, the victims told police the shooting seemed to be random because there was no argument or disturbance prior to the gunfire.
Mears agreed with IMPD Chief Chris Bailey who said this week that the proliferation of machine gun conversion devices poses a huge public safety risk.
"They're easily accessible. You can buy them on the internet or you can make them at home on a 3D printer relatively cheap, so it's a significant issue," Bailey said.
"The amount of danger these firearms pose to people in the community is significant," said Mears.
In addition to the wounded victims, multiple cars were damaged by the gunfire.
Prosecutors believe a second shooter fled the scene in a blue SUV. Police are still working to identify that specific suspect.
Anyone with information on that suspect can call Aggravated Assault/Robbery Detective Tyler Swoveland at (317) 327-3475.
Contreras had his initial hearing on Tuesday and is now being held on an $800,000 surety bond pending trial.
