Fay Biccard Glick Neighborhood Center to temporarily close due to finacial hardship

INDIANAPOLIS - An Indianapolis community center is temporarily closing its doors as financial hardships threaten to topple a valuable resource that has served its north side community for more than 40 years.

The Fay Biccard Glick Neighborhood Center, located at 2990 W. 71st St., will close on Aug. 15. The closure also includes the childcare center, meaning parents who depend on the neighborhood center for childcare will need to make other arrangements.

The Fay Biccard Glick Neighborhood Center stressed that the closure was only temporary, though a reopening date hasn't been determined.

The board cited financial challenges as the reason behind the closure and stated an intensive audit will be undertaken during the shutdown. In June, the FBGN Center underwent a leadership change and then, in July, attempted to curb the financial strain by reducing staff "considerably," according to a spokesperson.

"These actions are intended to help the Center financially reestablish itself so it can resume operating responsibly and achieve the Center's key mission of serving our local families for the long term," explained a FBGN Center spokesperson.

The FBGN Center said its financial hardship stems from "overstaffing" and "overextending financial assistance" to more than 300 families that the center serves monthly.

"Our priority focus right now is working to support our families who will be impacted by this temporary closure, and particularly our families that use our childcare program," the center said. "We are working with local childcare programs in the neighborhood and surrounding area, as well as the United Way of Greater Indianapolis and other partners who can connect families with alternative options."

The FBGN Center stated its goal is to reopen on "solid financial footing" with new leadership and better management practices in place.
