Fishers 71-year-old says she awoke to 2 strangers sexually assaulting her

FISHERS, Ind. - A 71-year-old woman told police she awoke to two strange men standing in her bedroom. The home invaders allegedly attempted to sexually assault her with a flashlight before she fought the suspects off, chasing them from her house while screaming, "I'll kill you."

Elijah Oates, 24, and Daquez Stockdale, 25, were arrested last week in connection with this case. Both men were charged with burglary, a Level 3 felony and criminal confinement, a Level 4 felony.

Oates faces several additional charges, however, including sexually battery, a Level 6 felony, and attempted rape, a Level 3 felony.

According to court documents, the assault occurred around 6 a.m. on June 12 at the woman's home on Brookmere Avenue in Fishers. The victim told police she had left her garage door open overnight by accident and woke to a flashlight shining in her face and two strangers standing over her bed.

The victim described the suspects as two men believed to be between 20 and 30 years old. The men allegedly grabbed and groped the women while attempting to sexually assault her.

The victim said she fought back, ripping a mask off one of the men and bloodying her fingers during the struggle. The suspects ended up fleeing the residence after the struggle, the victim chasing them out the garage and spotting them jumping into a white car.

The suspects reportedly stole the victim's purse while inside her home. The stolen credit card was later used to make a purchase at a Meijer near Cumberland. Police reviewed surveillance footage from the Meijer and identified Elijiah Oates as the suspect who used the stolen credit card.

Court documents reveal Oates was spotted entering a silver Chevrolet Sonic. The car matched the suspect vehicle captured on surveillance footage leaving the victim's home in Fishers, according to investigators.

Police ended up catching up with Oates and taking him into custody.

According to court documents, Oates allegedly confessed to entering the woman's home when pressed by police. He claimed the two men only entered the home due to the garage door being left open.

He said the incident "was all about money" and reportedly confessed to stealing the woman's purse and searching for valuables in the bedroom. Oates claimed the woman attacked them when they were in her bedroom, stating "it went wrong" and that she woke up and "freaked out."

When asked about some of the allegations, Oates allegedly stated he "would never do that to an elderly lady."

Court documents reveal that Oates eventually named Stockdale as his co-conspirator when pressed during interrogation.

If convicted, both men could face up to 16 years in prison for their most serious charge.
