FOX59/CBS4 join Habitat for Humanity in building home for single mom

INDIANAPOLIS - FOX59/CBS4 are once again proudly partnering with Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity to build a place for one family to call home.




The tradition continues to help a local family make homeownership a reality. This year, single mom Shakari Lovelace will finally have a place to call her own just north of Indianapolis in the Crooked Creek neighborhood.




"To get something that's brand new, that's ours, it'll be really, really nice," said Lovelace.




Lovelace has been renting an apartment for herself and her daughter, Ahri, but the price of rent kept ticking up.




"It's a huge accomplishment for me, and also stability as well, especially with the current rent prices," she said.




Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity said home values have increased 42% since the summer of 2020, making the supply of affordable homes at record lows. Because of this, many, like Lovelace, have found the dream of homeownership out of reach.




But Habitat for Humanity helped Lovelace reach this goal, something she saw firsthand while volunteering for Habitat.




"I was actually a volunteer for Habitat for a couple years before I did the program," Lovelace said. "... anybody that's interested, I encourage you to apply!"
