Frankfort PD: Suspect drove through corn and bean fields during police chase

FRANKFORT, Ind. - The Frankfort Police Department arrested an Indianapolis man after a vehicle pursuit that unfolded Monday evening.

In a press release, FPD indicated that one of its officers observed a person driving recklessly near the intersection of Jackson and Fairground Streets around 6:41 p.m. The officer indicated that the driver later ran a red light at Armstrong Street at 80 or 85 mph.

After watching the driver run the red light, the FPD officer activated his emergency lights and a vehicle pursuit ensued. During the chase, the driver struck another vehicle. He also drove through parking lots belonging to a church, Goodwill store and hotel.

The chase came to an end when the motorist drove through a corn field. He entered the corn field after driving through a bean field.

When the driver's vehicle came to a stop in the corn field, police used a drone to locate him. Once officers spotted him, the driver pretended to surrender multiple times. Each time police closed in on him, he continued to run.

FPD confirmed that its officers eventually took the driver into custody. Police reported that the man continued to try to resist arrest, even after he was in custody.

FPD identified the man as 48-year-old David Gonzalez Reyes of Indianapolis. The agency also indicated that Reyes caused significant damage to the crops that were growing in the fields he allegedly drove through.

Upon searching Reyes' records, FPD determined he was wanted in Marion County for failure to appear in court. The court appearance Reyes allegedly skipped, according to FPD, was tied to a 2017 OWI case he is implicated in.

Reyes now faces the following preliminary charges:

  • Reckless driving - a Class C Misdemeanor

  • Leaving the scene of a crash - a Class B Misdemeanor

  • Resisting law enforcement in a vehicle - a Level 6 Felony

  • Resisting law enforcement - a Class A Misdemeanor

  • Possession of methamphetamine - a Level 6 Felony

  • Aggressive driving - a Class A Misdemeanor

Reyes was also charged with two counts of operating while intoxicated. One of the counts is a Level 6 Felony and the other is a Class A Misdemeanor.

Level 6 Felonies are the most serious of the preliminary charges Reyes faces. The maximum penalty for a Level 6 Felony in Indiana is a 2.5-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.
