Greenfield Police Department K-9 killed during encounter with off-duty New Palestine police officer

GREENFIELD, Ind. - One of the Greenfield Police Department's K-9s was killed during an encounter with an off-duty New Palestine police officer on Monday.
According to a press release, K-9 Ace got loose at his residence in New Palestine while his GPD handler was was not home. After he got out of his residence, K-9 Ace encountered an off-duty New Palestine police officer who lives nearby.
GPD confirmed that K-9 Ace bit the New Palestine police officer after coming across him. K-9 Ace's bite caused severe injuries to the New Palestine police officer.
Per GPD, the New Palestine officer was eventually able to subdue the K-9. The officer's actions, however, resulted in the death of K-9 Ace.
GPD did not indicate exactly how the New Palestine police officer subdued the K-9. The department reported that it is still investigating the incident.
"Our thoughts, prayers, and full support are with (the New Palestine police officer) and his family during this extremely difficult time," GPD Chief Brian Hartman said via release. "We will be here to support him through his recovery."
GPD reported that it is now actively reviewing its K-9 procedures and safeguards to see what steps can be taken to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
Hartman also issued a second statement on the incident:
"We also extend our heartfelt condolences to Officer Freeman and the entire Greenfield Police
Department on the loss of K-9 Ace, a dedicated service animal and valued member of our
department,."
